FFB joystick like the Microsoft SideWinder Force Feedback 2 can work as a gear shifter using a program that makes certain directions "snap" (pull/push) the stick into certain configurable directions using force feedback and output keys like 1-6 or PRNDL bound to gears/modes:

I just wish BeamNG did this natively to automatically (depending on vehicle transmission/mode) switch between, e.g.: manual (H-shifter), automatic (with "steps"), handbrake (pull the stick forward when letting go), flight stick (pull the stick to the center) or helicopter stick (hold the stick at the last place it was let go from)

    Any thoughts on this?

Can it possibly be done with more modern gear like the TurtleBeach Velocity One?

If it's a DirectInput device with at least 1 force feedback axis (not just vibration) then it should probably work. Even my Thrustmaster T150 steering wheel is supported by FFShifter which is way older, though obviously it lacks a Y axis like the MS FFB2 joystick and it doesn't make sense to use it instead of BeamNG's wheel FFB.
