2000s Rich (circa 2004)

Pictured: The house and cars of an upper-middle-class family comprised of a married couple and 4 children. (DISCLAIMER: The following is pure fiction and is a complete exaggeration of what an American family was in the 2000s)

The father is an affluent and high-ranking real estate broker who buys everything high-end for his hobbies, such as the best hi-fi for listening to his 60s and 70s rock classics and the highest-end rear-projection TV (as of 2004) for watching every sports game in his massive man-cave, a large Pioneer plasma TV with a mismatching flagship Sony 5.1 audio system in the living room, the latest computers (like a 17' PowerBook, HTPC, HP Media Center m1000 series, iPod Classic 4th Gen, and his slightly older HP Pavilion zd7000 which he uses for investing and monitoring the stock market. At least he has the income and financial responsibility to make the monthly payments, often more than the amount due. He shows favoritism to his oldest two children, who are pretty close to him. He thinks his wife is full of crap and occasionally complains to his friends his wife might be leaving him in the future. Regardless, he is on good terms with her and they both contribute heavily to the household.

His house is a Tuscan-style McMansion built in 1999 with 4 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms (one being the master bathroom with a spa tub), 2 office/multi-purpose rooms, 2-car garage, a massive finished basement with a bar and winery and Pittsburgh-style toilet adjacent and home theater area full of local professional team merchandise, a large and opulent Tuscan-style kitchen only for showing off or for use during parties (there is a second kitchen in an adjacent room for actual daily usage), a massive foyer section with a grand staircase you see in Mexican telenovelas (but the left railing ends abruptly halfway up) which has a massive organic Christmas tree during the holiday season, an open living room connected to the big kitchen which is also hardly ever used and is more simplistic than the man-cave setup yet still high-end, and of course next year the father will get new stuff such as the upcoming Verizon FiOS infrastructure. Some notable stuff include all-leather sofas in the living room and man-cave, Persian rugs which his wife convinced him looked good, and the aforementioned massive walk-in winery in the room next to the basement bar. He got himself a huge-ass SUV to show off at work and when guests are over.

The mother is a decently-paid nurse who works diligently and acts very independently, all while handling the high-stress but occasionally fun task of raising 4 children. Her independence has caused a small rift in the relationship with the father, who discreetly and indirectly wants to assert his dominance in the household. She shares the father's spending habits, splurging on decent clothes, accessories, and her hobby of watching reality TV like Survivor, the Kardashian stuff, and other notable programs at the time (some rumors among the father's friends claim he bought that living room Pioneer TV just to keep his wife from changing the channel when the games were on.) While the father is close with the kids during his free time and likes to do activities with them, it is the mother who usually takes the kids everywhere they need or want to go. The reliable but still high-end minivan has never failed her at these many trips, and keeps chugging along even though she misses oil changes sometimes. Now that two of her children have their own cars, she has more free time and the van has had larger intervals between backseat cleaning. Some of her more vain, opportunistic, and materialistic friends are influencing her thought process.

There are 4 children, the eldest an 19-year old athletic girl (who participated in softball, swim, and soccer) about to go to university, but unexpectedly in order to become a doctor. She was a very popular girl in high school who was highly regarded by many boys to be extremely attractive, yet only dated once when she was 15. Despite how feminine she is, her younger brother influenced her hobbies and she has a slightly tomboyish side which likes video games and MySpace. Her parents bought her a new Japanese car when she turned 16, which she takes care of well to not disappoint her parents and to keep her appearance tidy all around. She doesn't like her mother too much because of her somewhat la-de-da and gossipy nature, which may have caused her to hang out more with her brother. Since she got a car and a part-time job, she has been very down-to-earth now and isn't influenced by her less mature friends.

The second eldest is a 16-year-old boy who recently got several stuff for his birthday, including, but not limited to a slightly used early 90s Ibishu Covet he has plans to rice but unfortunately has been treating it poorly for the past month, maybe because he was jealous his parents got him a used car when his older sister instead got a new car (at the time). He has a cool and grungy room with a hand-me-down CRT TV which used to be his dad's bedroom TV, several consoles like the Xbox, PS1, PS2, and a high end (for 2004) fully custom gaming PC he built with his dad's help. He likes his dad's taste in music but also loves 90s and 2000s rock (including the emerging Emo rock), loves DnB because of its use in his favorite childhood games, loves piracy and burning CDs, has a hand-me-down iPod Classic 3rd Gen, 2 electric guitars his dad got him and also an Ovation guitar, loves MySpace, has been recently obsessed with Halo CE and to a lesser extent WoW (he's not THAT much of a nerd), has a few but good friends, posts and comments a lot on forums, but touches grass frequently by playing soccer because his parents make all their children participate in sports. Oh also he loves Monster energy drinks and Mountain Dew. A certain website will launch in 2005 which he will likely become a heavy user of and film himself frequently doing random shit on.

The second youngest is an 11-year-old girl who (uhhhh I have no idea what younger girls liked in the 2000s but it probably is very pink maybe... totally... yeah... anyway let's just say she has that one Disney-themed CRT in her room from when she was obsessed with Disney princesses) likes everything Harry Potter related, has a few questionable and quirky but loyal friends, and loves reading teen novels at the Borders while her mom gets coffee and does her accounting. She has excellent grades in school and plays softball like her sister. Her relatives like to say she is a younger version of her older sister, and is likely headed in the same direction. Did I mention she loves Britney Spears and the Spice Girls?

The youngest is a 10 year-old boy who looks up to his older brother, and gets whatever his parents or brother don't want anymore. Despite this, his parents LOOOOVE him so much to the point that he gets a huuuuuge amount of nice stuff for his birthday and Christmas (he also gets things randomly occasionally whenever his father feels like it) mostly Legos, and I don't mean just Legos, he often gets almost an entire year's wave of Legos, and also has his older brother's hand-me-down sets too. It is very unlikely he cares or notices the distance between his parents. He doesn't like the younger sister too much because she has completely different tastes as him and avoids him at school to talk to her "friends."
