"We have exciting news to share! A whole new version of Minecraft is on its way. This time, it’s for Windows 10 – Microsoft’s new swanky operating system that’s due for release on July 29th.
We’re calling it Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition Beta.
Just like the first release of Minecraft all those years ago, this version will develop and evolve over time with the help of your feedback. That’s why it has “Beta” in the title – because it’s not quite finished, and will become even more fun over time. Just like the other versions of Minecraft, all future updates will be free. We spoil you. We really do.
If you’re one of the 20 million(!) players who have the PC edition of Minecraft (referred to by techy people as the Java version) you’ll be able to download Windows 10 Edition Beta from the Windows 10 store for free. Other players can get it for the paltry price of $10 during the beta period (the length of which is still being decided).
Minecraft is available on Windows, Mac, Windows Phone, iOS, Android, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4 and PS Vita, and now, Windows 10. Not every version of Minecraft is exactly the same, but they all feature two distinct game modes – Creative and Survival – that cater to different types of players. All versions of Minecraft support multiplayer.

You’ll recognise some Pocket Edition features in Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition Beta, along with potpourri of cool extras. Here are some highlights:

    • Craft, create, and explore online with up to seven friends playing Windows 10 Edition Beta, through local multiplayer or with your Xbox Live friends online.
    • Play online and local multiplayer with other Pocket Edition players thanks to a free update, due to arrive soon after launch.
    • Multiple control schemes! Switch between controller, touch, and keyboard controls with little to no effort!
    • Record and share gameplay highlights with built-in GameDVR.
    • Help shape the future of Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition Beta with our built player feedback mechanisms!
    • Chickens, zombies, pigs, boats, armed skeletons, potatoes, zombies, baby squids, enchantment tables, villagers, naked sheep, iron golems, potions, ghasts, pickaxes, carrots, and all the weird and wonderful goodness you’ve come to expect from Minecraft.
We hope you’re as excited as us for Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition Beta. It’s gonna be cool!" - Mojang.COM

The MC W10E is free for users of standard PC edition.
Graphics library will be DirectX 12, not OpenGL 2.0.

Aka. They ported pocket edition to a windows metro app.

Error 404: fucks could not be found.

I'd rather they just added the option of pocket edition touchscreen controls to the full game.

Technically that's probably a very very good thing, because it means it's probably coded in some sort of C variant instead of the terrible Java version that's already here.

I'll take the terrible Java version. Vanilla minecraft is no fun at all.

Was long ago confirmed that pocket edition shares nothing with main minecraft code wise as it is actually a C *library* which is then referenced by another application. This way they can have 1 main codebase for pocket edition code, then have an objective C iOS app that deals with the iOS touch and graphics APIs linked to the existing library, a dalvik app that deals with the android touch and graphics apis and a C++ application that deals with raspbian specific stuff.

I will be getting it, but only because I was genuinely thinking about buying pocket edition for my phone at one point and I have a 7 inch windows tablet I can use instead.

This version is coded in C++ not Java and have DirectX 12 not OpenGL 2.0. ;) For me this version is a edited Pocket Edition for WP.

Welp, not upgrading to Windows 10 if I'm right and the current version won't work with Windows 10. Mailny the fact that A. it seems it is completely different from current PC version and B. Seems now that online MP is purely Xbox live.

It's a program built for Windows that has an .exe executable and not any other kind, of course it'll work.

Current version of minecraft works anywhere that can support a Java 1.7 compatible system with the ability to load the LWJGL library. Namely, windows 10.

This is just a new windows 10 exclusive variant. Old version does run fine on windows 10.

    - - - Updated - - -

Nah, its fully possible for the exe to reference windows 10 exclusive libraries and hence fail to work on windows 8. Its also possible to simply be a dick and have a software check for windows 8/below and prevent execution.

Its not even confirmed to be win32, it may be winrt (which can now run windowed as of windows 10 rather than fullscreen as it did in windows 8 and RT (windows RT is not to be confused with winrt)).

They were talking about running the current Java version on Windows 10, not the other way around.

They'd be in pretty deep shit if they updated it to not run on Windows 10, and it's obvious that they'd keep supporting the original because of the modding community.

Oh I dont even run minecraft from the .exe launcher, I use the .jar one, less hassle with it trying to install its own java runtimes.

Also notable that the .jar launcher isnt even platform specific.

Considering this is literally just a port of pocket edition to PC and they've already shown off info for the next mainstream minecraft game thats a bloody obvious yes... Old minecraft wasnt even just for windows 7/8, thanks to the wonders of Java it runs anywhere that supports Java and OpenGL, be that OSX, XP, Vista, Linux or BSD.

Does Windows 10 edition have all the blocks, items, etc. of Pocket Edition or Java?
