Explanation of "axes" value in the inputmap?

I'm trying to figure out how the "axes" value works in the .inputmap files. I think I understand a few things about it...

Let's say the starting value is // axes: 5^Y^X^U^R^Z:

1.) The first number appears to be the number of axes.
    2.) The ^ character looks like it's a delimiter.

But I'm not sure what the letters themselves are supposed to represent. Any ideas?

I'm trying to configure a Logitech F710, if that's any help. It works with the default Xbox 360 controller settings for the most part, if I switch to Xinput mode and copy the new GUID and product name over. But it looks like the D-Pad and the left analog stick are flipped as far as the mappings are concerned, and I wanted to correct that. EDIT: Whoops! Forgot that the "Mode" button flip-flops the inputs. All is well now.

It's comment. It just reports what axes are available on the controller; the game doesn't read it. Anything with // before it is a comment.

I see. I thought otherwise because of this image from the wiki entry about custom controller mapping.
