Hey everyone, I am thinking of replacing my current (4 year old) laptop with a new one. The old one: HP Pavilion dv7 Intel Core i7-3610QM @2.30GHz 8GB RAM Windows 7 64 Nvidia GeForce 630M - 1GB --- New One: HP Pavilion 15t Intel Core i7-5500U 8GB RAM (Could be upgraded to 12GB for $70 USD) Windows 10 Home 64 Nvidia GeForce 940M - 2GB Price- $689.99 USD I haven't purchased the new laptop yet, so I can't tell you all the facts about it (I'm getting my information off of the HP website) Is this worth my money, or are there any other recommendations for what I should get? Thank you.
Umm... don't get a laptop for gaming? You can get a more powerful desktop that runs cooler and more reliably for less money, plus even less if you build it yourself. Laptops are designed for mobile productivity, desktops are designed for maximum performance. Unless, of course, you intend to use it as a laptop for productivity and mobility and occasionally game on it. In which case, it's a pretty good deal. Graphics card is a little weak, I'd never go under a GTX x50 for gaming, so perhaps look into a GTX 950M? Or 960M?
Thanks for your advice. I was mainly only getting a laptop due to budget (and the portability is just an added bonus), however if the price on a desktop was low enough. My current computer can "run" beamng, but only on low, and even then there is still some lag. I just thought if my current setup could handle it, maybe the one I'm looking at could handle it a bit better. Anyway, if there are some nice budget desktops, I'd go for one of those, too. Any recommendations/advice are welcome.
You and I both known how expensive things are in Canada, so I'll need to know your budget. If I use the price of the laptop you were considering, you can get a very decent rig that could run BeamNG plus most other games at normal/high settings @ 1080p60fps. That is, if you build it yourself. Prebuilts have their place but they're generally a pricy CPU and a junk graphics card, all on the crapiest foxconn motherboard. For a custom build I recommend an i5 4460 and a GTX 960, or perhaps an R9 285. Every other componant is essentially pick your favourite colour and in the end you're looking at a little over $700 CDN without peripherials.
That's actually a really good deal for that laptop. But if portability isn't your main concern then build yourself a machine.
Realize that you are going from a quad core cpu to a dual core cpu. May have its limitations in some games. Pros and cons: http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i7-5500U-vs-Intel-Core-i7-3615QM
Alright. If I am to do a custom build, I'm going to need some know how. I'm trying very hard to stay under $800, so that is my budget. If someone could provide me with some information on how to do a custom build, that would be much appreciated. If someone can give me a link to a decent tutorial or instructions, I'd appreciate that. **EDIT** How's this for a custom build? Is there anything else I need, or are there any suggestions? Here's the parts: Case: NZXT S340 White Steel ATX Mid Tower Case Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda ST1000DM003 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive PSU: CORSAIR CX series CX750M 750W ATX12V v2.3 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply New 4th Gen CPU Certified RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-8GBXL Motherboard: MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard CPU: Intel Core i5-4460 Haswell Quad-Core 3.2GHz LGA 1150 BX80646I54460 Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 4600 GPU: PNY GeForce GTX 960 VCGGTX9602XPB-XE-OC 2GB 128-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 SLI Support XLR8 Elite OC Video Card Once again, I appreciate suggestions. Sorry about the long post. Also, this is very pricey for my budget. Any cost saving suggestions are especially appreciated.
Z97 with i5 4460? Corsair CX 750W for a 960? drop the motherboard to H97 or H87/H81/B85 (These last three might need bios update for the 4460 if I'm not wrong). And the PSU, an EVGA 500W is enough for that build. I would also consider a 4GB R9 380 instead of a 960.
Alright, I appreciate your input. I really didn't know what parts I needed, so I just kind of went for the better ones in hopes that they would work together... which is why I wanted input. Anyway, I'll try that out, and see if that drops the price much. Thank you!
H97 board, good idea unless you're planning to SLI, but yes, no need for a Z board with a locked multiplier CPU. Don't go any lower than H97 though. PSU, an overkill PSU is never a bad idea for future proofing, I'd get at least a 600W.
And most sellers update them if you request it. Others already come updated: http://www.amazon.com/Gigabyte-Inte...p/B00I6DLKE8/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top?ie=UTF8 "worked great! no need for bios update for a I5 4460" "Got this motherboard along with the new intel G3258. It came with the latest bios update (f5) so no need to flash" Although that one is H81.
Thank you everyone for your suggestions and support, but I have decided to buy myself *this* prebuilt desktop. Once again, thank you to everyone for your help.
CyberpowerPC puts shitty PSUs to their builds. Also that build has a shitty 760G motherboard, those tends to have 3+1 power phases without any heatsink, it is a bit dangerous with a FX 6300, so if you're going to pick that up anyway, Undervolt that CPU.
Looks like you made a decision about that product. One piece of advice. Reading reviews about the product that you desire to buy is useful somehow before buying it.
You could get that PC for $500 if you built it yourself, but this one includes windows pre-installed so I guess it's not that bad of a deal. You might want to replace the PSU though, a no brand 350w is just a disaster waiting to happen.
