Oh no, Microsoft can get my browsing history and passwords. Better go back to DOS in a computer with no network connection. /s

TBH I don't give a crap if MS has my stuff. As long as it isn't publicly available for everyone to see... It's not like they're gonna go through my browsing history, I'm one in millions of users and they have no reason to care about me. It's not like they're gonna steal my password for what, my Microsoft account? It's intheir own database, they can do whatever the hell they want with it. And even if they do look at my stuff, so what? Nobody in there even knows me, what could they possibly do with it?

If my private information is in the servers of a huge corporation that keeps it to themselves and won't ever care to look at it, then it's still private. Because it's there, but nobody looks at it anyway.

Pretty much my thoughts. Any information they want they probably already have. But the thing is, nothing bad has happened as a result, I don't particularly care about it since it's not personal information, and there are far more reasons to stay with Windows than move to Mac or, god forbid, Linux.

I'd never use OSX, it's a huge, hideous clusterfuck of an OS. And I'm sure Apple is no better than Microsoft in terms of privacy, if I even cared about that.
Linux, as much as I like open source software as a concept I don't think I'll ever like its file system. I just like Windows'. Having the actual drive root as the OS root directory makes perfect sense and I don't know why you'd ever want to do otherwise. Windows' system might be simple and somewhat limited, but it works, makes sense even without having to think about it too much, and does everything you need it to do - so no need to overcomplicate things. Executables are much more straightforward as well - you have one file extension the OS recognises as an executable binary file, that's it. It works even for the most complex of tasks, and it's easy to learn and use.

The only thing I REALLY dislike about Windows is the way it handles killing processes. It seems to repeatedly ask the process to quit rather than force stopping it or intentionally crashing it if all else fails. Which is funny considering how quickly it can kill itself.

Also because gaming. Games on Linux are getting more popular sure, but many AAA titles are still Windows exclusive and I'm not giving them up.

What do you do to end processes?

Going to Details on Task Manager and pressing delete on the process definitely works as a force stop for me.

I'll switch it over on my laptop, but since NR2003 and iRacing hardly work on it it's not going on my gaming PC.

Sometimes they can take a while to stop or not stop at all if they're completely frozen. The latest Windows versions are much better, but I remember XP was utterly terrible at it and 7 still had trouble sometimes.
    Not a huge problem anyway.

Let me just point out one major flaw with this argument in general: that information isn't just confined to Microsoft. Whether it be through first party data sharing or sale of analytical information, as goes on quite regularly, or through compromised data storage systems, as also happens more often than you'd feel safe in being aware of, the data that Microsoft collects about you is NOT private and in the modern state of digital security, not secure.

Microsoft having your login information to their own services? Entirely benign. Would you also give them the login to your Paypal/Google Wallet/etc. account? How about your credit card information? Your home address? Maybe your social security number (or national equivalent)? How about all of your tax return information?
Even if you would trust Microsoft with that data, there's a significant likelihood that their databases will be exposed to external attack by illegal hacking activity. Of course, even in such an eventuality, you're still only one user in millions, but you're one user in millions with their data freely available on illicit marketplaces. These sorts of things happen more often than you would think.

Beyond the technical aspects, however, you also have to ask yourself: does Microsoft need any of this information? Is it reasonable for them to have any of this information outside of the direct requirements of the services they're providing?
People taking a generally unaware or blase attitude to data security is one of the reasons that we have such a massive underground market for personal information that shows no sign of losing momentum on the downside of this decade.

Tried the upgrade. I'm having mouse stutter issues, which renders gaming nearly impossible. Downgrading tomorrow.

If privacy is such a concern, just use Linux. Seriously, it's not that hard.

Tdev, we need Linux support please.

Bank details, Steam has them anyway. Paypal, etc are online so same thing. Everything else is pretty much irrelevant, since nobody who doesn't know me would care about it. Go ahead, look at it all you want, chance is you'll never meet me anyway.
And since actual data theft from major corporations is actually quite rare, that data is once again stored in many places... Where nobody will look at it.

And if Microsoft doesn't have it, someone else will. If you don't like having your data all over the internet, well, then maybe you really should go back to a DOS machine with no internet connection.

    - - - Updated - - -

Use Linux, give all your info to Google/Valve/socialnetworknamehere/Apple (if you own an iphone) anyway.
Wow, such privacy. mfw accidental doge

Completely unrelated, you might want to try some troubleshooting before immediately downgrading.

I'm going to be "That Guy" right now, but turn off the computer and leave it off for a bit, windows will resume the install when it boots, my computer has an issue with restarting, it doesn't post on the first restart, so I had to turn it off and when I did it resumed the upgrade :)

    Bump.

How has everyone's experience with Windows 10 been so far? I've recently found out how to enable Cortana in Aussie Land! It works really well, only a few worries tho, I have to say "Hey Cortana, can you tell me the weather for tomorrow in Celsius?" or it'll just do F. And tracking packages in Aussie Land is non existant. it doesn't support Aussie Carries because I had to make my computer think it was in the US (not IP changing, location and language settings). Cortana also doesn't support SPOTIFY. You can go "hey cortana *beep* skip song" "Skipping Song" but you cannot start songs "Hey Cortana, play music" "La de do do daaa!" -.-

other than that, it works great! its great with reminding me things and telling me the weather, it can also start applications, so when I'm googling stuff I can tell it to open TeamSpeak 3 for me :)

Absolutely rock steady. Upgraded from 7 about 2 weeks after launch and have had no dramas apart from Oculus Rift support going out the window. I could see that coming a mile off though so it's not really an issue and I'll be patient.

Games run fine. Blender runs fine, It's not trying to kill me in my sleep and the ultra-fast boot times are glorious for those quick sessions before work.

Never really bothered with the new features. Still doing things the same way I did them on 7...and XP and so on. Might try them out later, but no rush.

    good, but still prefer 8.1

also it completley fucked up all the permissions, i can not save ANYTHING in my documents folder unless the program i'm saving with is running as administrator (meaning it's impossible for me to copy things to it, always complains that i need permission)

same applies to all my other user folders (pictures, videos, music, etc, etc)

can't fix them either, it immediately sets it back to super restrictions after i set it to normal

not even command prompt running as admin seems to be able to fix them, it says it changed them, but nothing changes in real world usage, so that's great

I like Windows 10, but TBH I still like 7 better. I still want Microsoft to make a true desktop-oriented OS. As nice as the universal app concept is, a mobile-friendly UI just doesn't work on a PC. I find myself using desktop programs left over from Win7 over their Win10 counterparts, simply because the UI of the latter is crap on a desktop.

The new Music app is a good example of why a mobile-like UI sucks for desktop. There's a different screen for everything and all the controls are massive, while Windows Media Player does all the same things in a single screen, displaying a lot more information, and is actually much nicer to use because everything is scaled for a desktop-class screen rather than an insanely high DPI phone screen. WMP also plays video and displays pictures as well as playing music, and even lets you create playlists with audio-only and video clips.
There's absolutely no reason I'd ever want to use the Music app, there's no reason a mobile app should be installed in my desktop OS in the first place. It feels more like a universal app tech demo than an actual useful thing. Same goes for the Videos app, it does nothing WMP didn't do better and there's no reason for it to be on my PC. Worse even, I cannot uninstall these apps.

And the Settings app, that should just be a part of Control Panel rather than having *two* configuration interfaces which even conflict sometimes. Both have user account settings. You can only change your account picture from the Settings app, but if you want any advanced options you must go to Control Panel. Anything with a Microsoft account, Settings app. Permission settings, Control Panel. It's so annoying. Same with desktop customisation. There's a Personalise section in the Settings app, and there's also the Personalise option in Control Panel (also opened by right-clicking the desktop), which now serves no purpose other than to save themes. And of course, the Settings app has a rubbish mobile interface with big buttons and huge pictures, because fuck desktop users...

So whenever I'm gaming or browsing, there's no difference, it's not any better or any worse. Whenever I can use a desktop program, I don't mind it either. When I have to use a universal app though, god dammit I wish I still had Windows 7.

    /rant

As for Windows 10 for phones, I love it, it's where the universal apps were actually meant to be used. Although TBH, I liked the WP8.1 UI and Win10 feels a lot more Android-like. Not a bad thing, all the apps are objectively better, but it's not very different from other mobile OS's anymore. However, the latest preview release is so completely broken I'm rolling back to 8.1 until the proper release in November.

I only have Win10 on my tablet. i dont use the universal apps, for example the default video player stutters badly but if i use windows media player it plays videos without any issues. i have also had some weird issues with the universal stuff for example the screen would strobe whenever i used the OneNote universal application which did fix itself after a week. but im not keen on using a note taking application if it has bugs since notes are pretty important.

So if i intend on using the tablet to achieve anything i usually carry a wacom tablet with it that i can plug in over usb so i can have a really nice experience with that. For web browsing and watching video the touch screen is fine though.

Never bothered downloading a third party media player, WMP was always good enough for me. And the settings app has a long way to go to replace the control panel, it doesn't have a tenth of the features. And if it does, I really hope there's a way to have an 'all settings' mode rather than the crappy category view that the control panel defaults to since XP.
