I love the idea of creating my own cars for the game, but I really don't know where to start. I understand the fundamentals of modeling in Blender, but are there any tutorials available that teach you how to create a car step by step? I would use Blender, but could learn other free programs if necessary. Thanks, Boa
I would recommend putting aside creating vehicles until you have a good understanding using Blender. Good sources are Blender Cookie, Blender Guru, and Tutor4u. There are plenty of other tutorials out there but honestly, just get used to using most of the functions. Learn how to use the tools, materials, cycles render w/ nodes. Kinda screw around with it. Maybe doing a project car on the side as you go. Here is a basic tutorial on vehicles. Be ready for a lot of work and dedication. I am still a complete novice and yet I have been using it for months now with off time because of moving and work. Blender Guru goes fast and primarily deals with scenes and animations. I find it really informative even if I have to stop the videos multiple times. I have also purchased books from Amazon. Now I just need the time between work + life, BeamNG, and learning modeling. We should make a sticky in regards to making vehicles or just modeling itself. A lot of beginner's are going to post (as some already have) wanting to know how. If we could point them in some directions it would be helpful to everyone. Anyway, just learn from some video's or reading and repeat. Try a tutorial project again from scratch without the tutorial to memorize the tools and modifiers you may need. I have so much to learn myself that it can make my head spin sometimes. Edit: fixed spelling & sentence structure
Ok. I've looked at many of the tutorials before. Most of them just don't work, for whatever reason, and I just can't finish. the rest expect me to know stuff that I don't and I can't find tutorials for those things. But I'll keep looking.
I guess it depends on what you would need to know. I find figuring out all the hot keys helps a lot. Keeps your mind focused on the project at hand. A second monitor is always helpful, no matter the quality. Repeating something multiple times from a tutorial into your own project helps also. Start simple. Repeat with an added touch of your own. I know it's tough. I have had a hard time figuring out simple things that I cannot seem to find in the documentation or a tutorial. When I started, I took the Blender Keyboard Layout image from Google images. Stuck it in Paint and customized it for myself while updating anything that had since been changed. Stuck it on the wall between my monitors. Hope this helps and maybe some of the better modelers on the site can bring forward some tips in a sticky so people have a place to look and they won't be bothered as much. This game is becoming a hit and with its ability to mod and customize, people will be asking a lot of questions. It may not be the right place but at least we can channel everyone to some good sources (if forum allows). I am having a difficult time just getting a little custom logo on the cars in-game. Weekends always work better as I am usually mentally tired on weekdays after working.
The devs have thrown together a nice set of guides for creating your own cars and the like: http://wiki.beamng.com/Content_Creation As far as modeling, you should grab Google Sketchup and learn how to model on that. It's way more beginner friendly and will ease you into 3D concepts that make using Blender much easier. http://www.sketchup.com/
I stand by my advice. Getting started in Google Sketchup is a thousand times better than being stumped and overwhelmed by the ten million features in blender. Ideally, sure, you "learn the right way", the op told us he's been unable to do that. Blender is very confusing to use for beginners and they shift the GUI around every 2 months so tutorials quickly become outdated. So the only two REAL options are give up due to frustration or get something easier.
