I noticed there were no threads or anything about this, so I thought I'd start a little discussion here. Rat rods are a type of car, similar to hot rods, that is usually built from scrap parts, often with new and more powerful engines. The beauty of rat rods is that you can be creative with them, and if you build one, it is your car, and it is unlike any other Personally, I like rat rods based on pickup trucks. Here's a couple pictures of rat rods. As you can see, the most predominant color in these is brown because rat rods are usually left unpainted. Lust for Rust baby. Thoughts?
^_^ Love rat rods when they're done "right", Both the ratted 1930's-1950's American cars and the rat-VW's. Sailor Jerry car from Roadkill and the ratted VW Golf from MCM are just epic... Then there's also the other style... Which is just stupid imho:
I do rather like them too. I think that their creators obviously put a lot of work into building them, and they are often rather unique. My favourite rat rod would be this Mazda RX-7, for the reasons described in the video that I cannot remember
I only like rat-rods if they are truly built from spare/scrap parts. I hate nothing more than someone taking a perfectly good car and just tearing it apart to create a rat rod.
I'm more into utilitarian approach in rat rodding. I mean a perfectly usable pick-up truck or a passenger car retaining its patina - corrosion, natural blemishes and small scratches and dents - plus a mildly lowered suspension and a set of perfectly maintained chrome wheels corresponding to the era which the car comes from - just for a contrast, emphasizing that these looks are the intended effect. A bit like this one.
I completely agree with CTJacob. Nothing worse than someone hacking up a perfectly good car for no reason.... We're all forgetting one car that belongs in this thread though... RUSTY SLAMMINGTON. "But Mythbuster, why are you posting one of the mintest 5-series's ever in a ratrod thread?" Don't worry, you'll see. Then this, spare bonnet: Then this happens after he lends his car to a friend... Car is written off by insurrance, the end.... Or is it? But it isn't actually. It's where this thing suddenly becomes an icon! I believe I read those wheels at the end are actual gold-plated Ronals, the only set in the world. And then, sadly, in the middle of another major rebuild(shaved engine bay)... This happens. The owner said "I guess Satan just wanted his car back"... Rusty is dead, for good this time Or is it? Afaik, that's the last we heard about the car, they started rebuilding it in June 2013... But word says they're working on it... Owner now also owns this stunning BMW E9: Hopefully Rusty Slammington will come back more badass than ever! Can you imagine? A ratrod built out of a shell that's completely burned out? If Mike pulls that off, there won't be any car out there with a better story, imho. To quote the people chanting in the last pages of the thread explaining the fire: His name was Rusty Slammington, Rusty Slammington was his name, Rusty Slammington his name was. :/ Read more here btw: Build thread Satan wanted his car back... Thread from after the fire
