Welp, I kind of fixed my column shift that was extremely loose and sloppy a few days ago. I say kind of because i accidentally broke the indicator that tells me what gear I'm in on the dashboard :/ It turns out all i had to do was find a new bolt on the steering column, tighten it up, and walla... nice stiff shifter. I did a good burnout or peelout, or whatever leaving the gas station after i filled her up at 11 at night. Ill need new tires soon i suppose, as i do this far too often.
Oooh, I looked on Google Street View. That looks so flat and fun to drive on at speed. The route I drive has lots of elevation changes, which is fun, If you check out that link you'll see a lovely corner which goes sharply down and then up, so you get a bit of a g-force going through it at speed. Funnn.
It appears that Christmas came early this year. Amazon delivered them a day earlier than I expected. The tire shop should have them mounted by 7:00 PM. It turns out that the sidewall bulge wasn't caused by a manufacture defect, but my own negligence of hitting a curb at 45 MPH. A $500 mistake. I was unaware it was that serious, and I'm astounded I didn't bend the rim. But in my own defense, I was driving at night with no right headlight.
Did a lot of things today. The most time-consuming thing was the blower motor. First off the wires were hooked up then the motor didn't run then the wires grounded out. Then the switch failed so we drilled out the rivets and cleaned it up and put it back together. The switch then worked for about 5 seconds then stopped so took it back apart and put it back and then to it apart again and finally started working. This took the whole afternoon. By the way its a '55 F-100 with a 351W (my dad's).
Flushed the heater core. I need to buy a few litres of G13 and flush the green crap out of my cooling system too.
Bought this 1991 BMW E34 525i last week: Done a bit of work on it this weekend since the engine never really was getting up to temperature. Found that the previous owner had removed the thermostat completely instead of replacing it! Put a new one in, as well as a new metal water pump, as the old plastic one looked ready to disintegrate into 1000 pieces. Drive belt was all cracked and ready to snap too, so new one of those. That was a bitch to get on... All that to find i've introduced a leak in the radiator, so looks like more work this weekend. Lucky the getting the radiator out in these takes about 2 mins, super easy to work on (so far). Superb fun to drive though, rear end gets pretty wayward in the wet/snow, lucky my Assetto Corsa instincts kicked in though...
I'm bored, so I'm going to write a to-do list here. There's a rust hole under the front door sill (just infront of the jack point) that is almost as big as an apple. Driver's side heated seat function doesn't get any current to it, cannot find out why. Trunk seal is probably bad. Everytime I open the trunk there is a waterfall. That f***ing idle when car is up to temp. Surges until it dies. Drives me nuts. Also cannot find out why it does that. Sometimes when I play music loudly, the stereo just dies and resets itself... #1 rule: Never pick the first "best" car to buy. Which is what I did.
E34s are quite possibly the best proportioned and thoughtfully styled cars ever. Seems to be in really good nick too, so congratulations! What a mess. You should get an A4...
Thanks, I completely agree. Overall its in good condition, only meaningful rust is the front jacking points, which I think I'll get cut out and welded up. There are plenty of bits that need looking at though, but its expected given its age (older than me )
