Heh, that video is a lot more relatable than you might think. While I still have some activity in this thread, I was wondering if you guys wanted more of these tournaments (and whether you have any suggestions). I've started a new job recently and have a lot less time, but there's two scenario ideas I have cooking that I might turn into tournaments too.
I'm really glad you're doing this. Any complaints or negative comments I might make are rooted solely in my own lack of ability. I have a local friend (and BeamNG.drive player) who's interested in the next tournament you setup. I'm also looking forward to the next one! As far as comments & suggestions: Personally, long stages are very difficult for me due to attention deficit problems. I can be seriously/fatally distracted within 10-15 seconds of starting a scenario; on short scenarios I just retry but on long scenarios this can be a real issue. That said, I think that targeting 4-6 minutes is great for what you are doing. If you wanted a change of pace, I think that a multi-stage tourney like this one but with 4 or more very short stages (in the 30s to 2m range) could be fun. Something else that crossed my mind was a gate-to-gate timecard. At the "race complete" screen where it shows your overall time for the stage (and a screenshot is normally taken) it could also simultaneously show the gate to gate time for each checkpoint, or maybe section times for designated sections. That way when people post their times with a screenshot others will be able to see what sections leave a lot of room for improvement. This seems pretty possible, but I recognize that it adds upfront and per-scenario work. Finally another comment - I've only run stage 3 and stage 4, but assuming that stage 1 and 2 are of similar quality: (a) I'm impressed and I think that they are good scenarios, thank you. (b) The flexibility to build all these courses really drives home the quality of the level design work done by LJFHutch and anyone helping.
First of my last times - 5:37.41 Also, in relation to your previous post, I think that these tournaments are great fun! The 5-6 minute stages are new to me as I'm used to shorter ones so perhaps some of those for the next one? Whatever you do, I'll take part as the scenarios are of very high quality! Bring it on!
I've never seen anything you've said as complaints or negative, so don't worry. As to your comments: As AM V12 mentioned the same thing, I'll look into creating shorter scenarios. I'm currently playing with three different "themes" for the next tournament, one being roughly the same length, one being somewhat shorter (4 to 5 minutes) and one being really short. I was worried about the effects of having scenarios that greatly vary in completion time on the total time, which is why all four stages are roughly 6 minutes now. I'll consider having more varying completion times for future tournaments, which gives me more freedom in creating shorter scenarios. I could probably brew up a raceStatistics.lua extension that takes care of all the checkpoint/lap time tracking fairly simply. Then the only per-scenario work would be deciding what to display and actually displaying that. I like this idea. A) Thank you. They're currently awaiting approval as a pack. I wasn't sure at first whether to release these as a mod, but the positive feedback has surprised me, so I decided to go for it. B) The maps are awesome, though I feel like I have to point out that ECA is a lot better than the other maps. While JRI is of a similar quality, its roads very rarely cross each other, which greatly reduces my options for track layouts. But yeah, mad props to LFJHutch and cohorts. Thank you (and AM V12) for these comments. Developing these scenarios in a way that involves you guys is probably my favourite thing about mod making, so don't shy away from posting criticism, suggestions or ideas, they're all more than welcome.
I know the current scenarios are rally-esque and I really enjoy them, but I would also like to see how you would involve AI on a track. Whether they simply be traffic that you have to pass on a tight road, or opponents. I know this might remove some of the forum user competition but I think it would be interesting given your skill in creating scenarios! Again I look forward to whatever you post as it's so fun and relaxing to have a goal and not stop until it's completed!
Thanks. As far as the varying completion times - this did cross my mind. What about changing the skipped-race penalty from "best time + 2min" to "best time + 30%". I suppose that this might motivate people to skip the shortest races because there's so little to be gained by being the best on a 45s race though... Maybe convert to a points system? That could get somewhat complex, but for example (I'm sure that there are better systems already thought out)... 1st = 10pts 2nd=9pts 3rd=8pts participated = 7pts skipped = 5pts You mean like an "unexpected oncoming car" scenario? Such as a 1-2 minute downhill section where you meet an AI driver coming uphill around a blind turn? ... interesting! No need to have that as part of a tourney, that could be released as a solo scenario like several others Scepheo has created.
Many many attempts later, I have improved my time... Video uploading (1.25GB). As of posting time, it's 22% uploaded with an estimated 47mins to go. Will edit post later. EDIT: Seems the estimated time was correct. Now processing. No clue how long this will take. EDIT 2: About 8 minutes remaining. I'll just embed it now before it's finished and hopefully it'll show up once finished. EDIT 3: It's up!
I'm going to skip the last event, to much is going on two weeks of classes left :\, "Finals Week" Good luck to the rest.
I think a points system would be beneficial as it would create a easy to understand standings. I don't think competitors who skip scenarios should get points though. As for my idea, I actually meant something more like having to overtake a car on a narrow road, but your suggestion also sounds good!
And I'm here, struggling to get 6min... It's crazy how my times are crappy but how I'm not last by not skipping any race 6:14.76 Anyway, these were good challenges, and I will surely be here for the next ones. I just think you should do shorter ( ~4min) races, there would be more people who will finish them, and therefore more participants
Finally got GPU that support DX11. Tried to test out my skill, all can I say is this is damn difficult! after like 50th try I got this: Spoiler Rally version of sunburst makes it kinda too difficult for me. I'd love to see next tournament in Ibishu Covet
The tournament is now over, and the results are in! Final Results 01. AM V12 ......... 22:53.52 02. RyvyLo ......... 25:52.75 03. mumboking ...... 26:17.07 04. Motherhazel .... 27:18.28 05. I'd also like to congratulate RyvyLo and mumboking for taking the rest of the podium and finishing second and third, respectively. Again, a massive thank you to everyone who participated, you're the ones who made this possible, and an absolute pleasure to organise and run.
Hooray! I didn't do that badly! I'd probably be lower down on that list if people didn't skip stages.
