Just found out that server boards with 2x xeon quad cores can be had for sub 500 USD, I plan to purchase one of these. Dell PowerEdge R710 2.5 Server 2x 2.26GHz Quad Core 72GB RAM PERC6i 2PS+ 4 Trays for $545 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-PowerEdge-R710-2-5-Server-2x2-26GHz-Quad-Core-72GB-RAM-PERC6i-2PS-4-Trays/171796280875?_trksid=p2050601.c100085.m2372&_trkparms=aid=111001&algo=REC.SEED&ao=1&asc=20140211132617&meid=361fdf8be4674d409a326f7c415e9c6a&pid=100085&rk=3&rkt=4&mehot=pp&sd=321935615598&clkid=1716040620922084731&_qi=RTM2067269 Indeed try to find a board with at least one PCI-E lane, with a little rigging you can mke a pretty nice PC out of a server! you may have to run server software but that shouldnt stop gaming, unless windows 10 has support for muilt cpu sockets im not aware of
Well, yeah. I think that is the ash-onto-my-head-part again. But I was close. Just failed it about as much as an I is wide and gave a basic explanation. Saved the day!
Never mind my SSD is fine... Just a dead motherboard :/ plugged my SSD into another PC and it booted fine, so now I borrowed a i5 3330 and motherboard from my brother and I've got my PC back up and running until I can purchase a new motherboard or new motherboard and CPU.
Since you're running an i7 950 its probably best to just go and get a CPU while you're at it, if you can. Something like a 4670k would be a pretty good choice for price to performance and its like 30% faster than the 950.
Might do that, depends what I can get on finance, haven't got much cash to myself what with Christmas around the corner and such. I think I must have bent a few pins in the socket changing the CPU to the Xeon which never even worked, hmmm, such is life.
So I just found out that this motherboard has a overclocking utility! Hmmmm. Wonder how far I can push this non K before it starts to beg mercy. Motherboard is a ASUS P8H61-MX tiny motherboard, looks cute in my case. Ignore the eye gouging cable management, I needed it back online asap so cable managing wasn't that big of a concern at the time, suppose when I've gotten all my files recovered from my now non working raid array, I'll redo it all and start messing with the overclocking utility.
Buying a server for gaming is just not a practical idea. Servers need specific airflow, make loads of noise, often have redundant PSUs, ... Plus, the form factor is not practical and the Xeon E5520 is not designed for gaming: it's clocked at a low 2,26 Ghz, and the multicore benchmark is not great either. For the same price, you'd be better off with a PC containing 2nd/3rd gen Core i5 and GPU included.
Yeah recently I did loads of research and this is true, I really want an 8 core system but a server system would be more trouble than its worth IMHO.
Just a question, is pairing a r9-390 with a 8370 crazy, or would the r9-380 be more suitable for the processor?
You won't have any problems running them if that's what you mean. With an 8370 you shouldn't have too much of a CPU bottleneck either - just make sure everything has proper cooling.
I have laptop that has high temperature even I just open one application. I want to know if I can add fan inside?
I'd start with dusting out the laptop. If that doesn't work, go into the task manager and check to see if any background applications are running at ~100% CPU utilization. Also, make sure you're using the laptop on a flat, even surface. The laptop can't cool properly when placed on carpet, for instance.
It'll be fine. I'm very comfortable with my dual 270s (Combined, they're better than a 290) and my FX 8320.
priced up a custom water loop for my pc. £175, hmm, that could be better spent elsewhere if I had that cash
I have a computer with a Thermaltake Level 10 GT case still using the stock fans except for the rear 140 mm fan (that would be a 220 side intake, a 200 front intake and a 220 top exhaust) with a Hyper 212 EVO pointed upwards and a Dell Optiplex 745 case fan underneath it pushing air upward as well, and the two largest heat sources in my case are the Core i7 2600K Sandy Bridge 2nd Gen CPU overclocked to 4.4 ghz as well as the XFX Radeon R7970 3GB DD Edition that I have overclocked to 1030mhz GPU 1455mhz VRAM. With some fan curve adjustments to CPU and GPU fans, I have not yet exceeded 60 degrees with GPU or 55 with CPU. It's a bit noisy, but not noisy enough to be a problem if you are paying attention to a videogame in the first place. I personally would only go for a watercooling setup if I needed a very overpowered machine for extremely high end tasks, as for a low noise setup it would work nicely but the noise of the pump is still a problem if watercooling is not required to make the computer run very silent under load.
should be noted (and was mentioned in your longer post) that windows 10 will support dual and even quad socket (AMD) motherboards.
I have a dell Inspirion that my grandfather had last used 2 or 3 years ago due to him getting a new computer for Christmas, and the Dell Inspirion 530 sat in a shed for a couple years and I got it out in, oh I don't remember, but I think I got it out in September this year and it needs a graphics card (so it doesn't lag while typing on forums, watching YouTube, etc) as its got Intel G33 graphics, and a wireless card. But what I want to do to it is put another CD drive in it as it only has one as it is the lower end model of the 530 I would also want to get one of those USB to SD card readers for it too I imagine there's a way to turn it into a sleeper PC, but it would be a long process of modifying stuff inside the case like the screw posts for the motherboard
