You should keep it under 90C (194.00F) if you want to be safe. Some cards can take more and some can take less, but keep it under 90C and it should be good. If you need more info, there's some conversation about this subject: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3029041

As XpoinT stated, the safe temperature for most chips is under 85?C or even 90?, but AMD does not specify the TMax for this chip. I think the video cards bios would shut the card down if it was to reach it's maximum temperature limit.

I have a XFX 6870 and it tends to crash at about 75 degrees Celsius so i would say a good max would be 70.

That is quite low! Something might be wrong with it.

"XFX" is the manufacturer of the card as stated, and in which way do you experience crashes? Are there any artifacts? Does it just stop responding and give out no signal?

Never heard of that manufacturer. They dont sell anything where i live. I should do some research before I say anything about card which I know nothing about.

When it crashes it stops at the last displayed frame for a few seconds then starts displaying video again with a popup reading "amd has recovered from a crash." That's it. no artifacts, nothing except a fuzzy screen for a split second during the crash, just before it recovers.

So you guys think I can run my Raedon HD 7770 60-70C or up to 80, without perm damage?

    Yes I have, sadly.

OP Yes you can safely run it up to 70 in my experience.

Yeah, just make sure it stays under 80c. Above 80c, it is possible that your GPU could start getting damaged.

Hm, weird... The only thing I can think of is maybe trying to clean up the GPU and maybe replace the thermal compound from the GPU to the heatsink to try and keep the temps under 70?

I have an HD 6850 and I've run mine at 100C - 105C for extended amounts of time with no ill effects (so far). I may have gotten lucky in the silicon lottery but I've found that the majority of cards will run safely at 75C and higher. Although the vast majority of people do like to keep theirs under 70C so it's probably a good idea to keep it cooler then 70C unless you know your card can handle it.

I used to have a GeForce 7300GT. It would normally get about 200F. I upgraded to a 7600GS which hit 250F for a week before I noticed the heatsink was hanging off. (Oddly, 250 is when it throttles) It had no lasting effects. I now have a Radeon HD 6750 overclocked that is normally under 150F. (Looking to upgrade to a 7770 or a 7870)

I used to have a HD 5850 with the stock cooling. I had the fan settings to manual, because the automatic didn't cool as much as I wanted, so one day I started a game and forgot to speed up the fan . I think it reached 85-90 ?C when I could smell that something was wrong lol, it smelled like a hair dryer . Since that moment I've always tried to keep it below 75 ?C. The HD 7950 that I have right now never goes any higher than 65 ?C (summer) or 59 ?C (winter)

That has nothing to do with the temperatures, it's just a driver crash. Try reinstalling it or don't use beta drivers, if you do.
