    Hello everyone.

    Ok so I'm going to build a new PC soon to replace my old Core 2 Quad Q6600 and GTX 650 system that seems to be getting more lackluster as time goes on. I already have a case and hard drives. I'm planning to utilize the new Skylake line of Intel processors. Specifically the i7 6700k. The systems' primary use is gaming, extremely casual streaming, and editing in Premiere Pro and After Effects. My budget is about $1000. For the 16gb or RAM, anyone that has ever used Pr or Ae knows that they are a total RAM hog. Also, it seems that everyone thinks that they -need- and i7 for video editing - can anyone vouch for this? I was thinking about going to the i5 if it would be fine for editing and getting an SSD or something. PCPartPicker link. Any advice/criticism is greatly appreciated.

    Tbh, while you can indeed edit on an i5, if you do alot of it, I can actually vouch for the decision to take an i7. Video editing does indeed benefit from the i7, gaming does not. I'll allow you to decide whether you edit enough to make the i7 worth it.
    Again, I can vouch for 16gb for editing. Hell you may even run out of 16, but you're already close to budget and your motherboard will allow another 2 sticks to be installed in future to bring you to 32gb if need be.

    If you do want an SSD, you could actually forgo getting a GPU and reuse your 650 on a temporary basis, then upgrade later. Although then you will be stuck with lackluster gaming experiences until you then reaccrue the extra funds for the GPU.

    I just built a PC with a 900$ budget, but had to reuse parts from my old machine to fit it in my budget. But it is possible. The extra 100$ in your budget should give you slightly more options in your build. But still, you will most likely end up reusing parts from your old machine like the monitor, speakers, keyboard/mouse, ect. You may be able to afford some new external parts, but that all depends on component choice.

    Here are my main specs, but keep in mind that these are not the full specs and you will need to add in the other parts;

    CPU; Intel i5 4690k
    GPU; MSI r9 270x 4GB (reused from my old machine. Good graphics card. Probably could get used from a trusted seller or someone who has a good rep. with dealing with used PC parts.)
    RAM; 8GB DDR3 1600 MHz (Brand isnt the biggest issue, but make sure you go with a brand you know and trust!)
    O.S; Microsoft Windows 10 Home

    I have left out several other crucial components. Worry about these above mainly as for these will influence the rest of your machine greatly. Then worry about things like the M/B, Power Supply, Hard Drive, Solid state Drive, Monitor, Keyboard/mouse, case, ect.
    If you have absolutely no clue as to what your machine is going to be based around, you wont have any clue as to what MB you will need, which influences what case you get too.
    I may have missed one or 2 components in this list that I am not thinking of, but it proves the point that its more than the Processor, RAM, GPU, and O.S in a full build.

    There is a thread floating around here on the forums that has an absolutely wonderful guide to building a PC, so if someone could post that here, its a great thread and will most certainly help in this case.

    Back to the original topic;

    Using the first few performance changing parts I mentioned, it should run BeamNG and many other games at decent settings if that is what you are going after in a full build.
    I personally would go for a better GPU, but I couldn't afford an upgrade over that card,and the card was perfectly fine anyway.

    If you can go with the new gen. of Intel processors, go for it. Just swap the i5 4690k in the performance changing parts of your machine to one of those newer CPU's and make sure that you get a M/B compatible with it.

    Again, I may have missed a key point or 2, so feel free to shout me out and add in what I missed, or mention me and link the thread with the PC building guide.

    Wouldn't recommend that build. You already had the card so it's fine - I ran a 4690K with an R9 270 for months until I got my 970 and it worked pretty well. But usually it's a better idea to go for a better GPU, IE buy an i5-4460, H97 board and GTX 970.

    Also, OP wants an editing PC. An i7 makes a huge difference and 16GB of RAM is about the minimum for a proper editing rig.

    You mean this thread? Made it a long while ago, it got buried quickly since nobody posts there. Thanks for reminding me of its existence, I should link it more often. Just updated it, by the way.

    Thank you everyone for your advice. I will be going with the build I chose based on your feedback. I will be getting the i7, using my current GTX 650, and getting the 970 later down the road when I have funds. Thank you for the help.

    Once again, thank you everyone for your suggestions. Just got everything put together and it's stupid fast. I decided to reuse the PSU from my old PC so I have more money to get an M.2 SSD. Anyways, here are some pictures...
