I think we should be able to get in and out of cars with the door opening, and walking around as a means of travel from one car to another (alternative to Tab). Also maybe picking up small props and placing them in the back of a van/truck would be cool.

This feature does not require any player model, such as RoRBot from RoR, and it could simply be a first person walking mode. Ideas?

No, I said "no player models needed" for a reason.

I would normally say that this is outside the bounds of BeamNG's core focus, and it is. I rather think the devs won't be playing with this idea much at all. That said, there is already a first-person movement system implemented into the core engine:

    from here:http://www.beamng.com/threads/light-camera-action.22700/page-2#post-340620

...albeit in a highly unpolished form. Still, a good foundation for building on.

I like the thought of the ability to leave vehicles for immersion purposes. Easily one of the most formative moments of operating any vehicle is getting into one. Moreover, if the devs intend to license the Beam tech to third-parties after .drive is complete, they'll probably want to demonstrate that their engine is capable of a vast array of possible forms of interaction. And vehicle-character interaction is one of the most likely forms of interaction to come to question.

But there is a downside: the myriad of whiny community members who would want it to become a full-force FPS. As such, if we intend to convince the devs to try this idea out, the question is not 'should they do it?', but 'how should they do it?' Fill in the blanks on the code, figure out ideas for making it play well with the game mechanics, identifying ideal keybindings, etc. For instance, I say the game should automatically disable the feature during scenarios or multiseat.

I'm still waiting to see what they will do with career mode, specifically with "owned" vehicles. I would be opposed to the idea of being able to exit a vehicle and roam around at any time, but if they have a garage of sorts for all of your campaign cars (pure speculation of course), then it might be pretty neat to have a system just like the one you described within said garage. Think of it like a cross between PGR3 and Forza 5.

The thing is that they would need to replace the vehicles with some sort of solid mesh to reduce strain on a PCs CPU since the car wouldn't need to move.

Basically you could just freeze the physics and have sort of like a basic free camera, but you could still interact with a garage door that doesn't use physics for example

Look at Rigs of Rods... that had a character that could walk in just about the most unpolished state possible.

Just make the vehicle static somehow... but I think it'd be better to make is so you'd have to park and it'd still be dynamic, I mean whats the point of it if when getting out all physics pause, it's not like walking around would add much extra strain at all.

So, Would this be like an invisible, low beam vehicle that has one camera at about eye level?
    cam.png
Or a controllable stretch of the beam that holds the camera in the vehicle?

I would like to see that in-game. It could really have a good plot going in the game.

yep, BeamNG could turn into an epic tale of an invisible guy who apparently can't die, has the ability to make cars appear out of nothing and drives like a complete idiot and often crashes... great story line, can't wait for the movie to come out.

But what happens when the entire car squishes?

you magically teleport in and out of vehicles of course, and you also have no physical presence so it doesn't matter that you get squished.
Edit: in all honesty though I would love a realistic permadeath racing game with a SLRR style career mode and garage and ways to make money other than racing being your only source of income and perhaps different amounts of reputation, qualifications, and accident history for each job type(it doesn't really make since to have "professional street racer" on your resume... especially when applying for a job that requires you to drive sensibly, like delivering things(pizzas or something as a low-risk early game job that requires little to no qualifications and then if you have a high enough safety history you could move on to hauling things in the boxvan and eventually becoming a semitruck driver) and races having bets for street racing and perhaps drift events that are mainly for reputation. not sure how actual track races should work though... and I know beamNG will never be anything like this but I kinda just went on a rant about what my perfect racing game would be. :p
