One thing that most car simulators fall down on is transmission simulation, particularly automatic transmissions. Only one game i know of (enthusiastic) has even come close. I think it would be sweet if the drive train supported torque converter action.
Basically, not many games, even simulators like Live for Speed, have "proper" automatic transmissions. For example, in most automatic transmissions, holding the gas pedal half-depressed will change gears at earlier RPMs than redline, which is used to save fuel economy. I only seen a few car sims using this, but as a mod using OutGauge, and they are pretty primitive design too. Not many games/car sims offer kickdown either, where you are in a higher gear and activate a lower gear by pressing the gas pedal. I always have to do it manually with Rigs of Rods, by activating "2" on the gear shifter.
Yea, in all games all automatics behaves like in extreme sport mode Normal automatics are changing transitions earlier, so the car is less dynamic but it moves more... smoothy?
GTA IV has the thing where you put your foot down and and changes into a lower gear for more acceleration
I would also say that an automatic kickdown would be cool, but people like me using the keyboard would not be able to recognize it at all. Perhaps even a seperate section in the truck file also for rpm limit? In ror, you can only tell the transmission when to shift, and max rpm is calculated to be like 20% more. If in the truck file you could have the automatic shift at 3500 but have max rpm at 7000, it would be very cool... Maybe even a comfort/ sport mode integration? This is asking a lot however.
I meant to "Enthusia" instead of "enthusiastic in my first post. Enthusia is an old ps2 game, it does a great job at simulating an automatic transmission.
I think it would be great to have realistic automatic gearbox in BeamNG! Most of major gearbox manufacturers provide gear ratios and other useful stuff for getting the values realistic as possible. Here are some examples of ZF (that buses use): ZF-EcoLife ZF-Ecomat 2 Of course, there are a bunch more data sheets for car gearboxes, truck gearboxes... But I am a bus fan so I have only shown the ones used on buses.
with engines now you can put low shift up at an rpm and low shift down and then high shift up and high shift down and anywhere in between it will calculate high and low means the demand for throttle
Firstly bump. Secondly totally unrelated to the topic at hand (torque converters). Thirdly you don't put high shift up and down between the low shift up and down at all, either that or I can't understand your english.
Duh! That's because they're not real automatic transmissions (torque converters), they're just plain manuals that happen to shift by themselves. By the way, who would need an automatic in a RACING simulator like LFS?
I hope this gets done properly. It would be cool to be able to go up a hill and have some torque converter simulation or to step on the gas and have it gear back and drone for a while before picking up rpm. The current simulation of an automatic is more like a single or dual clutch auto.
