Generally what happens when you want to push the limits of modern computing and programming techniques with a game engine from 2005
Compared to some of my endeavors recently it's hardly a futile effort. It's going to be THEIR engine when all is said and done. Making a game AND developing someone else's engine. I'm not willing to work like the devs are clearly.
Wolfire Games made Overgrowth and the engine it runs on - it's also been in development for more than eight years. So BeamNG's team either does very little to the game engine and proceeds with the game, or works on the game engine and stalls the game. I'm glad that they chose the former, but I still get thinking when I consider of what would have been, had they used a better engine. But they're too far in to switch now, so I guess we can just hope for improvements. But yeah, by the end they'll basically have rebuilt the engine mostly from scratch. They've already ported it to DX11 and made a bunch of other changes too.
I think BeamNG should be ported to car satnav systems. Also in this thread: people do not understand what the actual various aspects of game engine technology are exactly or what specifically they do within a game.
It would be awesome if BeamNg was ported to ue4. UE4s map and terrain tools are miles and miles better than Torque 3D. Also blueprint will be so amazing and make it much easier to make interactive maps. A man can only dream, right?
After I finished reading here I have to say.. Beamng is a great engine etc. I know everybody wants a new graphics engine. But you will have to wait for a few years then.. Porting a game between two engines costs loads of money and time.. I think if the devs finish the game they might try it. Sure t3d is a tad outdated, but it isn't my problem if you're only playing on lowest settings. No wonder why everybody wants a new engine.. With a bit of work on a few textures and a bit of post fx setting the game looks awesome.. You have to put some work into it... I mean no graphics "enhancer" can make this game look awesome. It makes the game look worse tbh Also having a new engine doesn't let you have better Performance... It makes it worse.. Especially people who have problems now.. I bet that no Potato OS pc here would run beamng with the likes of an Ue4 or something similar
I figure if you get good at Torque within the BeamNG game, and manage to master it on some decent level, moving to Cryengine or UE4 could be a walk in the park. Keeping up with and figuring out what the devs are doing with the engine after every update requires time and effort I can barely fathom giving up. I feel what the devs are doing with the Torque engine is definitely 'making it their own'. It's open source so they have every right to.
Not the first time this has been up, search the forums and youll see why they stick with T3D. Pretty good reasons afaik.
With labor in mind, the best choice of any engine currently available is obviously T3D. I would hate to see the BeamNG gods/devs rebuild this masterpiece of a game in a different engine because a few people weren't content with what they have. #respectthedecisionsofthedevelopers2k16
Hopefully the devs can get T3D up to modern standards in terms of graphics and performance, cause T3D is pretty outdated and it's an engine made for last gen games.
Regarding OG being mentioned as a comparison point. I think this game could easily be in development as long as overgrowth just because of the sheer size of the project at hand and what the devs plan to accomplish. To me that isn't a bad thing because it means they are taking their time to produce the highest quality product they can and really that's what people want.
