Hey guys, I have not been able to play BeamNG lately as it is virtually unplayable (as expected from a 6 year old laptop) and I decided it was time for an upgrade. Right now I am looking at 2 specific products which are in my price range and I was wondering which one would perform better on beam. https://www.pccasegear.com/products/35332/pccg-greenclaw-960-gaming-system or https://www.pccasegear.com/products/35406/acer-v-nitro-vn7-572g-72nb-core-i7-15-6in-gaming-notebook . I'm a little skeptical about the desktop as it runs a Pentium, whereas the nitro has an i7. An answer would be greatly appreciated, cheers,
    Ray
Edit: please disregard my ignorance regarding computers, I know I'm an idiot :p . Also please do not recommend doing a custom build as I am a dummy and I have no time to do so

both are poor value for money and poor gaming machines. The desktop does have a far more powerful gpu for less money though

Do you have any recommendations for my price range- 1000-1200? I don't mind if it is a laptop or desktop but I don't want to have to build something because I am ignorant in this field and don't have time.

Both Laptops and Desktops have their own merits and issues, it really depends on your situation- Do you want the most POWAAARRR or do you prefer to sacrifice some power in order to have the ability to play your games anywhere, and have a laptop for work/school/uni.

    Here's a build for a Desktop-
http://pcpartpicker.com/list/XjWHxY This one is a DIY, I know you don't want to build it yourself, but it's here just for comparison and consideration
    Prebuilt:
    http://secure.ncixus.com/ncixpc/ncixpc.cfm?uuid=8A5037A7-8180-498F-A937DCEDB4DE6C3F-6914199

    Here's a laptop-
    http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np8657-clevo-p650re3-p-8677.html

The Desktop is a much more powerful than the laptop, however the laptop is really easy to carry around (25mm thick, 15.6 inch), and will still play most games at decent settings (mid, maybe high at 60fps depending on game). Mainly it can be used as a full on portable work laptop, unlike the Desktop, which will be at home for gaming and productivity there.

You might even want to just hold back for a while (if you can) so that you can get one of the new laptops with a new generation of Graphics Cards which have just come out

If that's the case, then you could get a computer that's cheaper (say circa $750, using somewhat cheaper, older cpus and associated) in the summer, that will still be very powerful and upgradable, just so that you some money for (literally) a rainy day- Though I approve of your commitment to your Benz; What model is it?

It's always good to save some money, even if you have a budget.;)

The thing about Moore's law is true (for Intel CPUs anyway- One of the reasons why AMD are in such a prime position to retaliate with new CPUs), However for the relatively low cost of the new Skylake parts, you are getting more than just a 10-15% increase- you are getting access to (faster) DDR4 (which admittedly may actually be a reason to not get Skylake, as you mentioned, due to the higher price), more pci-e lanes (especially for M.2 type SSDs), and the future upgrade path for better Skylake chips (you could still buy a new Skylake Core i7 6700K long after Haswell has stopped retailing).

Also there's the point that the config is already at a sweet spot; It has all the components which match the price tier of $800, and any components you might add would be counteracted by the fact that most of the parts require more than a $40 increase to make any tangible difference matter- affording a Haswell K chip would mean spending more on a Z97 board, or maybe even a better PSU (though that might change when the AMD RX 480 comes out).
Also, if that money was really needed, we could just take off the fans from the build (they were added 'cos they look nice and add a bit of extra cooling). Still an interesting toss-up.

i know you dont want to build, but the build linked above is genuinely more powerful than both of the systems you originally linked *combined*. Now you see how much you were being ripped off? Scary thing is the same performance as that build can still be had cheaper. He's thrown a water cooler in there which could easily be substituted for a Hyper 212 Evo which while being an air cooler, is pretty silent, much cheaper and still fairly overkill. He's also thrown in a Z series motherboard and a K series processor, an overclocking combo, if you didnt want to overclock you can save money by not using the K variant processor and putting it in an H series motherboard. SSD, 70 bucks you can immediately cut straight off. 750W PSU? 600W more suitable.

He's given you a damn good build (and forgotten to chuck the cost of windows in there). It very nicely shows off how you were being ripped off. The prebuilt desktop and the laptop he linked are both much better than yours were too. though I slightly reworked it with an extra cost cut or 2: http://secure.ncixus.com/ncixpc/ncixpc.cfm?uuid=8A5037A7-8180-498F-A937DCEDB4DE6C3F-6914199
Notably, changed from a hybrid hard drive to a conventional one, I have run hybrids before, real world benefit is negligible and dropped the CPU 1 model, its still a good 3.6ghz quad core i5 but the 2 changes bring it within your $1200 range.

I have just had a go at making a pc for myself as I have decided that it is worth the time. I was wondering whether I am missing any components or if it will run well. I was looking at the systems recommended to me but unfortunately they were exceeding my budget

I would say change the power supply up to something like 600w, it isnt much more expensive and it allows alot of upgrades in the future.

Also the GTX 960 just really isnt very well priced anymore with the newer gen cards coming out. Wait a week for the launch of the RX 480 as its $200 and much much faster.

a copy of windows is missing (unless you were aiming to pirate it, though on a public forum I wont really be advising that, your choice though).
You might not necessarily need the SSD, though it is lovely to have, its just if you are riding close to budget, I'd say thats first thing to go.
There are cheaper cases out there, but these are subjective, its not a bad choice at all, ultimately you are the one looking at the thing and its always nice to have something of decent quality too. Essentially you have made a nice choice, its just if need be you might have a few bucks wiggle room here if need be.

Intels provided CPU cooler isnt very good, though it will at least do the job. I would highly recommend something like a hyper 212 evo, but then this is something you can always save for later. In fact if you are close to budget, thats what I would do, use the intel one, see how you get along with it (its likely going to be fine in that case and on that CPU) and then can always put something else in in future if you so wish, considering you arent overclocking you should be fine as is.

I'd also not buy that GPU at this time. Either wait a month or 2 for the AMD 480 to come out which is aiming for the 200-300 price bracket and more powerful than a 960, or buy everything but the GPU now and add a GPU later though the 2nd option will mean having to run without a graphics card for awhile and thats really no fun. But that is the one advantage of a custom build, you dont have to do everything in one go.

Its better than the W1, B1, B2, arguably GS and GQ. Its that good. Corsair knocked it out of the park with the CX series. The only real downside is that they might not have all jap caps.

I tried it, and it works pretty well. I can get a pretty steady 30 fps on Utah & DRI with two cars (I haven't tried adding more). Of course, this is on low graphical settings, but maps like Utah and Hirochi Raceway still look pretty good, all things considered, especially since I wasn't able to open ECUSA, JRI, Utah, or Hirochi Raceway on the computer I usually play Beam on (lack of memory).

so i did it. walked into micro center and left with a 6600k, some asus z170 gaming board (open box but complete), and 16 gigs of corsair ddr4 2600 all for about 370 after a 30 dollar online rebate on the mobo. im expecting a huge jump from my current 1090t. next post i make will be on the new platform wish me luck putting it together.
EDIT: not going so well over here. Finally get the thing to post and I get a bootmgr missing error. I use the on board utility to update bios from the Internet and now it's stuck in a loop. The utility tells me I need to do the same thing again but it also tells me my bios are up to date. The board is a z170 pro gaming from Asus and I'm honestly considering taking it back for a different brand board tomorrow. Any ideas?
EDIT 2: OK so here's an update to everyone who was on the edge of their seat. Exchanged Asus for gigabyte motherboard. Windows install was totaled in the transfer to the evil side and I deserve that. Installing windows from USB was hell but I eventually won. I'll admit just on the desktop the i5 is faster and I'm keeping stock till I see what it does vs the 6 or 7 year old amd predecessor. I'm giddy. Also, the cpu pins are no longer on the cpu :(

i don't suppose anyone is good with hackintosh's and kernel panics?

because frankly tonymacx86 and all the other websites are useless, as they take ages to respond (if they even DO respond)

so i'm trying to upgrade my yosemite install to el capitan (clover bootloader) however every time i just get a kernel panic on attempting to boot the el capitan installer/upgrader:

So I was playing a little Counter Strike and noticed that my audio was muted and so pressed ctrl alt del to get task manager up. Upon clicking the keys I was greeted by a black screen which I tried to wait through, but failed, and so I had to restart the tower (yes I did get banned even though I reconnected to the match- ironically enough it says I got banned for failing to reconnect to a match valve pls fix). This is quite strange as task manager seems to work while I'm playing Beam and pretty much everything except CSGO. Does anyone know how I should go about fixing this? I have tried sfc scan and have verified the integrity of the game files through the steam client, both of these don't seem to work. I was wondering if anyone has this problem or knows of a fix to it.
    Cheers,
    Ray

Well for a start task manager wont fix audio issues, more like the output device was simply set incorrect from the in game audio settings. But no, many full screen games *HATE* alt-tabbing like that, there is no fix except to run them windowed mode.

Looking into buying a Dell Vostro I came across. It features 4gb of ram, a Core 2 Duo E8400, some form of hard drive, a GeForce 7600GS (eww...), and a 400W Diablotek time bomb.

I can trick it out a little with my 550W Cooler Master PSU and maybe a GT 740 or something. Give it a little more ram and a new(er) drive, I think it'll be good for my sis' new computer or a travel lan-box or something.

that would actually be a normal pc for gaming with a 740 or a 750ti would also be a good choice for that then it can then run the most games on low settings might normal or max if you try beam without collisions. I bought the biggest extreme processor wich fits on my 775 socket it os i think called qx7700 but im not to sure if it is called like that cant remember it from the top of my head i hope it will run gta 5 and beam on high settings at 30fps
