To get storms to work you need a texture for the lightning. the lightning texture needs to either be a solid color or it needs to be horizontal in the texture. The lighting texture should be in levels/mapname/art then any folder you want it to be in the art folder. You could also add a sound of thunder if you want. You would have to create one or download one. And then you would need to create a sound profile for the thunder that points to the sound.

You also need to create a data block for the lightning. To do this press f6 to enter datablock editor. Then click the "New" tab. Scroll down till you see the data block "LightningData". Click this. A window should pop up. Give the data block a name. Leave all other settings alone. Click Create. Then click the "Existing" tab. Select the data block you just created.

You should then see settings. the setting you are looking for is StrikeTextures. Expand this menu. Click on one of the slots for the lightning texture and type in the path to you lightning texture. Save the data block.

Then add a lightning object. Look for the heading game. Under that heading there should be a setting "datablock". Select the your lightning data block. Save the level.

To make the lightning work for people who download you map you need to navigate to documents/BeamNG.Drive/art. Copy the Datablocks folder to levels/mapname/art.

You could also add a sound of thunder if you want. You would have to create one or download one. And then you would need to create a sound profile for the thunder that points to the sound. Then you would also need to have a folder for the sound.

You would also need to have your datablock use the sound profile for thunder.

If your sound profile does not show up in the list of available sound profiles then select one of the available sound profiles and save the datablock. then replace the name of the sound profile you selected when you saved with the name of you thunder sound profile. The sound profiles and datablock shoud be listed in the file managedDatablocks.cs in the datablock folder. open the file to edit the data block.

If you are confused check out my mod Coris Island Stormy http://www.beamng.com/resources/coris-island-stormy.999/update?update=2374 It has lighting and and thunder sound. It could be a good reference for how to set up storms.
    hope this helps.
