Hey, have been working on the damn suspension, took me hours, many grey hairs and another 1 remake, but still looks like modelled by a 3 year old. I dont know why Im failing so hard to get a good looking suspension. So, for now I leave it like it is, maybe Ill take care about that later again. This time I have some pics for you guys, please feel free to point at me and start laughing, I deserve it Ill take care about other stuff like interieur, and details now... @altoscroll: Maybe, didnt think too much about other versions yet, first want to get the basic vehicle done and ingame before adding other versions. What I thought about is maybe making this project something like open source, so everyone who wants can edit and reupload, sure the *.dae-file can be imported by everyone, but directly opening the 3dsmax or blender file may be easyer to handle. Dont know yet how to handle that idea to keep 1 clean file for everyone, and not 30 files with 60 different versions. @Kevinescobar: Thanks @Dredastttarm: Dont worry, all parts which have to be seperated will be seperated when its time to For now its easyer when the parts stay attached -Johnny
Looks a lot like you need to squeeze the frame rails closer together, and make those wishbones longer. That would clean it up a lot and give the finished governator a little more travel suspension wise. Also angle the wishbones down a bit more, not as horizontal like they are now. That would also allow for larger tires/wheels. Don't know how much of that you have already tried, but I thought I would help. I have worked on cars all my life, so seeing the way that is it looks funny, I think the changes I covered would make it look more realistic. Here are some pictures of an H1 setup It also looks like you have the hub mounts separate from the arms, that would not work. You have to have all the suspension and steering points together, otherwise the wheel won't move up and down properly.
The main part of the frame is bugging me. Doesn't look nearly smooth enough. Gabe's suggestion below this post is good advice, BTW.
You should narrow the subframe and make the lower arms much longer. Otherwise you won't get much suspension travel without really weird camber changes (and even bump steer). Check out the suspension geometry on a real Hummer: (imported from here) One lower arm is almost as long as the width of the whole middle subframe. Also, I would avoid all the smooth bevels and chamfers you have on the suspension parts. Leave them lower poly and let normal maps smooth out the hard edges (see: http://www.beamng.com/entries/40-A-look-at-vehicle-workflow-Part-1)
the geared hub sits inside the rim. the frame rails he has are pretty much right except in the very front they dont drop down that far. the rear supension is the same as the front just reversed. when you put in the front diff, the drive shaft runs along the driver side of the motor and the motor is offset to the passenger side. if its the newer model of the humvee/hummer it will have a 6.5 l gm diesel. its the same as what came in the chevy and gmc trucks and vans in the 90's. there where 2 trans mission a 3l80 and 4l80e with and adventure transfer case. tire size is 37.5 inches tall by 12.5 wide mounted on 16.5 inch bead lock rims. diff ratio is 4.53 top speed is around 60 mph if its a turboed model.
It's looking pretty awesome if you ask me. Should be a fun beast to drive and guzzle fuel in game when you get it finished. Thanks for the work you are doing on something so cool.
Hey, thanks for the advices and pictures, Ive tried to get closer to the real suspension, and I think this time it goes quite well. Not perfect, but atleast it looks like it may could work I think. -Johnny
Well you are making a parody of the hummer h1(Govenator G1). So in theory it doesn't have to be exactly like the hummers setup, it can be what ever you want. But I do love what you done with it. Amazing job buddy.
Looks much better than the original setup, toss the ball joints in for the hub assembly and its all good. Don't forget the horn for the steering tie rods so it looks good while steering. That is the only problem with building a 4x4 all that stuff is visible, and its sooo much fun to watch while going over bumps.
Hi, a little update, Im working on the wheels now (and steering-, braking- and drivesystem), and I think its the right time to get some feedback about which rims youd like to see on the Governator G1. Any suggestions, critics etc. are welcome. @Dan1035: Thanks! youre right, but I had to orientate on the real thing to get something done that doesnt looks too crappy like seen on the screenshots before @squat251: No, Im not forgetting it -Johnny
I'm sorta a classic type guy, and since this is based off the H1, I like these. Painted to match the color of the vehicle, of course. But, I'm sure this is intended to look nice, I wouldn't mind slapping these on it.
That looks really good! My only issue is the name the Governator G1 sounds more like a dildo than a 4x4. It needs something grand like the "Buxton Liberator" etc etc Other than that it looks awesome, good luck!
Will this have a GM Hummer H1 like-styled interior---- ----or the AM General HUMMER like-styled interior ---- ---- I would personally prefer the AM General style interior.
Hey, little update again, first wheel modelled, not the prettiest, but for half an hour I think its quite O.K. Gonna make some more wheels later, just want to make some progress on all the other stuff that has to be done. @squat251: Thanks, I think Im gonna make both of your suggestions @Fundador: Thank you! Well, sorry but meanwhile Im accustomed to call it Governator G1, so I think I keep that name. @Bullinator30: Sorry, but I didnt even know that there are differences. Can you please post some pictures? Thanks! -Johnny
Suspension is looking pretty good How many segments are on that coil spring? It seems a bit needlessly high poly - I think on mine I use 4 or 6 sides for the "cross section" of the coil and 8-12 for the whole spring's twist (when viewed from above like a cylinder)
Thanks alot Gabester, nice to hear that from you! Its 6 Sides and 16 steps per twist, could be a bit too much for one twist, I agree Tried with 10 steps per twist, wasnt enough, looked too boxy. Maybe I reduce it to 12.
Here are some images: AM General----- and the Hummer H1 from GM ----- Hope this helped, nice work so far, keep it up and take your time, this will be an amazing vehicle in-game.
