I just crashed an off road D15 into a low ledge at high speed. The roof caved in as it should but the roll bar was unaffected. In real life it would have bent, or pulled back hard and bent the chassis and/or torn off its mounts. Is it possible to make it strong but not indestructible?

It's certainly not indestructible. It's strong tubular steel or aluminum with strong welds and bolted strongly to the bed. Most aftermarket parts are a lot stronger than OEM stamped steel components. If anything would fail in an impact like that it'd probably be the bed it's bolted to, not the rollbar itself.
