i have been wandering about this for some time now. Is it possible to format the drive your operating system is running on whilst it is running? I uninstalled the driver of my c:drive and it will allow me to format it, but if i do will it still allow me to as it has still got windows on it? i do not want to try just in case it does and i loose everything.

Formatting the C drive will wipe everything off of it. Including System32. Therefore, no, your computer will not work after formatting the C drive.

You can't format the partition that the OS is currently running on. Formatting the partition will remove all data, including the OS.
You will need to reinstall an OS if you format it.

Formatting any drive instantly and permanently erases all days stored on it. Therefore, you would not be able to run Windows after you format it.

Why would you want to do this, anyway?

The hard drive should not be destroyed; just wiped clean of data. You can cleanly reinstall Windows afterwards.

Disclaimer: I do not recommend under any circumstances attempting this. Your data will not be recoverable.
