These Wharfedales are great for playing old rock, very laid back sounding.

Its a little condescending to say that other people are not intelligent enough or are too lazy to understand the type of music that you listen too. The reality is that people want different things out of their music and have different expectations of what it should be and what emotions they expect it to evoke.
There are incredible musicians in any (non super niche) music genre. However whether someone likes their work or not is not any representation of someone's mental capacity.

And anyway, since when is Prog Rock any more musically dense than anything else? And possibly more importantly what does that even mean anyway?

My favourite song ever is the Crazy Bus title menu song.

If you don't like it, then clearly you're just too dumb to understand how deep it is.

That's incredibly defensive of you. what I'm talking about is not about the music I listen to being better, or me being more intelligent. it's about appreciating the beautiful technical skill the authors used that most people honestly don't give a shit about and that's fine. the same way an audiophile can tell the difference between the 300 and 3000 dollar headphones and I cant, there is a whole nerd side to this you haven't considered. wrap your head around this piece of music by Frank zappa. this was only supposed to be a drum solo, but he decided to write music to go along and this is the result. they also include a metronome to prove that the entire piece is on the 4/4 time signiture! youd be surprised at how fun it is to play on guitar as well.

I'm pretty sure that if you had to fit We Are Number One and an extra 10mb of goodness on a Floppy Disk you'd have to make it look like this.

    It's certainly creative :D

That version where they've just taken the German verson and inserted random Hitler quotes is much more boring, not even very offensive just boring...

    now that's funny

    You could have fooled me
Its not that they are not capable of taking it in, or that they are too lazy to understand, its just not their sort of thing.

Im not gonna lie, that video you posted sounds no more musical to my ears than the Crazy Bus title screen, but ofc that is just my musical taste and not representative of the quality of the song itself.

The strange thing about musical skill is how hard it is to quantify. Many people will say that abstract artists do not have any skill while others will claim they have loads, same goes for music. But what objectively separates a skilled artist from one with little or no skill? since its not intricacy because you can have an intricate mess, its not how good a song is because that is subjective and it isn't how popular they are because some hugely skilled musicians are not very popular (although it is incredibly rare that popular music is made by unskilled people). Maybe there is an algorithm out there that defines a good song, but its certainly more complex than I can get to grips with.

I have no doubts the above artists are very skilled (people wouldn't listen to them if they weren't), however skilled musicians are not really a rarity and can be found in anything from pop music to classical to death metal to Jungle music. And I am including whoever produces Biebers music in that, since the production quality on it just like most other pop music is incredibly high (even if the music is not to my taste). From the mastering engineers to the recording studio technicians to the individual musicians that were in the song itself. All of them are incredibly talented people who worked together to create an impeccable product. While I would say much of the public isn't consciously aware of that, they are to some extent subconsciously.

I would like to add that as far as musical composition goes, I am a truly crap musician. Since I am not classically trained and my ears are not trained either. Hence I do fall on the technician side of things a lot more. Although I can have a lot of fun with a subtractive synth (I never got my head around getting desired sounds out of fm synthesis).

Interesting musical discussion going on. While the music amarks has posted is rather abhorrent to me, I can appreciate that it took skill to make. However, I don't understand how anyone can like music like that that is so disorienting. This is my idea of good music, written by the brilliant Rossini:
If you don't want to listen to the whole thing, just listen to the ending.
And here is another version that might be appreciated by more people here:

Other people's views on musical tastes are always so fascinating.

We are in the same boat as far as training goes. 10 years ago I was really into guitar hero. when I placed 4th in a statewide contest, my mother decided enough was enough and bought me a cheapo strat copy along with a horrible little amp for my 15th birthday. I took 2 lessons and hated them but was determined to figure out how it worked. for 6 months I fiddled and fought and tried to play along to led Zeppelin as good as I could, little by little. what a learning curve my god was it difficult. you make a number of great points as well.

    Well crap ...
21st century Fox is now trying to buy out one of the UK's biggest media companies. Because of the pound falling by around 20% after brexit UK companies are now much cheaper for US companies to purchase.
I have never been a fan of Sky (or a customer), but it's going to be really sad to see them go if the go ahead is given. Since it will mean Sky news will likely become more like fox news and more globalization of isp's and TV companies. And while the UK's media and Internet companies aren't great they have been better than US ones in recent history.

I am really starting to love our newly found sovereignty... :-/

Hopefully either sky's remaining shareholders or Ofcom will be able to prevent this, But I'm not holding my breath.
