What do you guys think of an upgrade from the Nvidia GTX 960 2GB to the Nvidia GTX 1060 6GB? My 960 still performs quite well in most games, but it occasionally fails to keep a steady 60fps at 1080p. MSAA anti-aliasing is usually turned off to keep the FPS in the 55-65 range and I usually just use FXAA. So do you guys think the upgrade is worth it? Here are my current PC specs: CPU: Intel i5 4460 @ 3.2GHz GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 960 with 2GB GDDR5 Motherboard: MSI H97 PC Mate Ram: 8GB Corsair Vengeance (2x4GB) Power Supply: Corsair CX 600 Hard Drive: 1TB Western Digital
How much difference there is between price and performance with 960 and 1060? How much more would 1070 to be? I recommend to check carefully if it really is your GPU and not for example single core/multi core performance of CPU that is causing dips below 60fps, probably you might gain performance by getting better GPU, but it might not always be reason why dropping below 60fps. You would also benefit from over 2GB of GPU ram, so that is again point why new GPU would be good, but I'm thinking like @Inertia, 1060 is going to cost quite a bit and might not provide much performance upgrade. How you feel about buying used card? Used 970 might be something to consider, for BeamNG, I would think upgrading CPU might be thing that would help with performance as in BeamNG GFX is causing quite some CPU load too, which might be reason for occasional drops below 60fps, depending from settings of course. Used i7 K model that fits socket of your motherboard could give really nice boost in many modern games, used 970 and used i7 together would bring performance to new level compared to new 1060 that would be quite minor improvement.
Hmm maybe you should buy a more powerful card if you can instead of a 1060 so you won't need to upgrade as soon later in the future because eventually the 1060 will become "slow" for new games and if you have something a little more powerful it can last you longer at good settings for new games at 1080p.
Go for a RX 470 or 480 4gb (or 8gb if you plan to have the card for a while.) The strix 470 4gb constantly has rebates and sales, just recently with discounts and rebates it was $106 USD.
1060 is a big improvement over 960, but it's not that big to be really worth doing. 1070 would serve you for much longer time in 1080p. But then again it's quite a bit more expensive
Would only recommend getting a new GPU if you're going to a 1070 or 1080. The 1060 won't find many noticeable gains besides how high you can crank the textures.
I agree with the others, either a 1070 - 80 or a 480. What is your avg FPS currently on what settings?
Jumping on bandwagon, wouldnt bother, I'd either wait another generation and get an 1160 when such a thing comes out, or upgrade in model too and get a 1070
Alright. Seems like everyone is saying to get a 1070 - 1080. I wasn't going to get a new GPU right now anyways, but I just wanted an idea of what you guys would say. Thanks everyone for the advice! I'll probably look into a new GPU later on this year. --- Post updated --- I mean just in general. In BeamNG Drive, I very, very rarely dip below 60fps. Even with up to 4 cars spawned at once. My current CPU is very decent in BeamNG and is good enough for me...
Depends a lot from which maps you like to run and what settings, but with some maps it will happen to anyone, also if driving at night with lot of lights in car so you can see where you are going. It's just thing to be aware of.
i see your struggle, yeah the GTX 960 is a sluggish GPU, i upgraded from a GTX 750 expecting a good change, but at the exact same time i went from 720p to 1080p which significantly hunted the upgrade. The GTX 960 2GB is also limited in vRAM in quite a few games. It is roughly equivalent to current general consoles i think, so it is quite weak
I'm seeing now RX480 for 220 euros locally, considering some GTX 1050 models cost close to that and GTX 1060 being over 300 euros, RX 480 seems to be quite cheap for performance. Also I'm not sure, but AMD GPU might perform better than excepted with BeamNG, sadly there is only one result in my performance thread, however I was surprised that RX 460 is sometimes even faster than 1050, sometimes slower too, but generally quite same level, so certainly AMD GPU is worth to consider for BeamNG. What I have reading from other threads, it seems that AMD GPUs are getting quite good results most of the time.
get a 1070 if you want an upgrade, i have one in my rig and i get 60fps in beamng highest settings dynamic reflection settings max and 3-5 cars (depends on said car) if you do want a 1070 i would recommend this: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/NJ...0-8gb-video-card-geforce-gtx-1070-armor-8g-oc quick question, is your monitor 4k or hdmi?
Going from a GTX 960 to a 1060 would be roughly a third more power (going by common synthetic benchmarks), whereas going from a 960 to a 1070 would be closer to a double gain in power. The 1070, or even a 1080, would be a wiser investment, since it would give you longer term performance for future games.
