i've skipped over reading the rest of the posts in this thread, but i've seen you post a lot of "this is fixed in the upcoming update!" recently, even as far as closing down a topic that is irrelevant until the update comes out.

now, i notice that my game seems to have quite a few little updates every week or so (at least, according to the box saying "there are updates available. would you like to update now?") why are some updates, such as the new Bolide, held back for a 'large' update? of course updates can't always be pushed out immediately as some updates depend on others, but is there a specific reason that the small fixes, new vehicles/handling setups, and new track can't be released as they are finished rather than waiting for one large content patch?

i would argue that your little updates and fixes are some of the most valuable for short-term happiness within the community, and releasing them more liberally might not be a bad thing.

i understand that you're not the one in charge of actually releasing things, but any insight would be appreciated.

additionally, it would be appreciated if you could mention the name of some of your dev branches... i've got a feeling that the functionality for updating to them is already in the patcher. subtlety is key, of course.

I think 2 years from now this game will be much farther developed into a mass game with servers full of people playing multiplayer. Thousands of quality car mods etc. That's just my guess.

When you get beta access to anything, I'm talking about the pre-public releases, I had it with a space combat game that never took off. The content withheld from you is probably not at all fun to use, you likely have 100% of the fun stuff. Its been polished and freed from most major bugs already and simply needs tweaking here and there.

Think of the flying Bolide mod, you cannot land in water with it. if a thruster touches water the game crashes. Think of massive flaws like that, game-play ruining flaws, on everything. then understand why they might not want to update just yet till things are actually ready for the public. They're not keeping anything from you, what you want does not yet exist and they're in the process of creating it. so this race update is half finished, they can't release it just yet. As tdev says, nothing works.

I can't push out updates, only tdev can. If I could, I would've released the vehicle updates as a small patch. I've also made some minor revisions to the Bolide just last night, so it's an ongoing process.

thanks devs for all the information! :)
cleared a lot of things up im sure.

the dev branch was only an idea, i mean 4 people can test the build or hundreds can :p
i mean you can leave the testing up to us while you work on with the other bits and more important tasks.

obviously the dev branch could be an OPT IN option so the players would know the risks when opting into it.
it could work out, it might not. just a suggestion to take the workload of yourselves really...

And this is exactly the reason why we are silent normally on how we test: people think they are getting less than others do. The updater indeed contains the concept to switch between the development branches, we just haven't had the time yet to merge off a 2nd dev. branch for this yet. (People will be able to choose a branch later on)

The problem is that people need to understand what Bleeding Edge means: that is it not more fun to test a game ridden with bugs due to the new features. Whenever we add a new feature, it is highly likely that they cause other things to break. Lemme give you a quick example. This is the new Graphical User Interface (GUI) that we are working on. It looks nice, but there is a lot of tech going on in the background:

    new_gui_poc.png

It basically is a chromium window rendered fullscreen on top of the game. We send the input to the window (which is buggy as hell: you cannot type anything atm...), and let chromium render into a memory buffer. Then there is the delicate task of updating a 3D texture buffer on your GPU with the contents of this buffer. That process is highly complex and we just managed last week to make it work well. The next problem is then the resizing of the window: It needs to recreate all buffers in the correct order, otherwise the whole thing will crash. We managed to get that running some days ago, so no more crashing on resizing at least on my machine.

The next big thing is the integration of the GUI into the game: Atm it only renders but we cannot couple the button etc, to trigger anything in our game yet. We discovered some days ago that the chromium windows that we use are running in a different process and such need special handling when it comes to message forwarding. Whenever the GUI wants to speak with the game, you need to have a special communication path that is simply not existing yet :-/

tl;dr: programming is a highly complex undertaking that is not easy to deal with at all times.

I hope this short explanation shows my point of the view a bit. I would love to update the players at much as possible, but that is not always possible when trying to achieve a decent quality level. Also, putting out more versions will always end up in having to support them more: look for bug reports, interact with the community over why something is broken (again), etc... :)

We were testing it, but it is not 64 bit compatible, and we are converting the game to be 64 bit compatible.

i was under the impression that awesomium doesn't support 64 bit because it's built on top of chromium - which doesn't support 64 bit.

The whole reason we switched to chromium was because we couldn't get awesomium to work with 64 bit... tdev would know more about this than I do.

no, we found a better alternative: http://code.google.com/p/chromiumembedded/

    - - - Updated - - -

awesomium also worked with chrome in the background. Its just another wrapper around it. The 64 bits compatibility was just one problem down the road with awesomium.

Everything in your post just explains the truth behind this little jingle:

"99 little bugs in the code
99 little bugs in the code
Take one down, patch it around
117 little bugs in the code"

might i suggest something for when switching branches comes (this is imagining one of those branches will be buggy beta testing stuff), probably have a message, that when someone selects the buggy beta branch, a popup message shows up (with the message in bold, underlined, and in RED) saying that this is a beta build, and there are going to be some major bugs, or something like that (if this is already planned, then wow, you guys are ALWAYS, one step ahead of the suggestions people have :p)

but yeah, people who ask "OMGZ, zats so cools, can i haz links" or "when dats updates comez out" and questiosn like that are annoying :p

Not sure that is a good comparison. The games are completely different. Different size, different engine, different goals for production. It would be nearly impossible for four people to make a GTA game :p

No update? No problem! I'd rather wait a year for a properly polished update than to have a hurried update every month with little content and rough bug fixes.

Keep up the good work. I can wait all year. There's plenty of other great games to play while I wait.
