Ima guess lift off oversteer, possibly while also starting to break. Having said that he did seem to be entering that corner at quite a speed too, not sure what that car can handle. Perhaps it could also have been not judging his speed correctly due to the sound of electric motors.
RE: Richard Hammond crash. That's the most evil kind of corner combination; a kink in one direction leading into a larger corner in the other direction. The first corner, which would be much less threatening on its own, forces you to brake much earlier than you otherwise would by effectively turning the road itself into a Finnish flick... but since the first corner is so slight, you're still tempted to brake late for the second corner as if it's not there, as a racer's instinct is to brake as late as possible under any and all circumstances. Even at the best of times it's easy to get the approach wrong with a corner combination like that, or just go charging in way too fast; since Hammond was way wide of the first apex, I'm going to assume it was both. Add the lack of engine noise making it hard to judge speed and it's off the cliff you go. Much as I hate to hijack a near-tragedy for my own personal agendas, I wonder if it would be possible to use this to stall electric car development on the basis that they're dangerous and hard to drive?
Well, that would be a rather self destructive way for you to try and halt electric car development. Since you would then be taking a stance that endorses self driving cars much harder. Or would suggest that all cars should have a heavy handed esc system that cannot be turned off. Equally most people are not trying to squeeze every inch of performance out of a car while driving it. Then there is also the factor that there are already a lot of electric cars out there between Tesla, Renault and Nissan. If it were the case that they were dangerous to drive you would already see them being disproportionally represented in road crashes. Then the issue would still be very easy to solve by pumping engine noises through the car speakers.

Not that bad compared to his crash in a jet dragster in 2006. Now it's become a running gag on TGT/Top Gear prior to series 23 that whenever Hammond is involved in a small crash, the other two presenters claim that he's died.
