Hello! Today is a momentous occasion, as I can announce that I will probably be building a computer good enough to actually run the whole game, after a year running the techdemo on a laptop that is older than I'd like to admit. Now I have no idea what or how to even approach building a computer, (I'm more of a car guy than a computer guy) so I figured I'd ask all of you who are actually computer guys. I don't have a plan yet, this is a fairly new thing, I've just figured out what I want to do today, so anything you guys have to offer, I'd like to hear!

    Budget: $500 or $600
    Type: Desktop (duh)
And buying a computer is out of the question

Paul's hardware just did a video on a $500 "Xbox One X Killer" the video on it is great and it's similar to what I would recommend. I'd watch the video and look at the parts list and go from there. I'm sure people will have input on the build and parts can always change to your preference. The only problem right now is the market for video cards, which does not look like it's affected the 1050 Ti.

Alright, thanks. I'll check out the video. Also, I'm thinking of getting a GTX 780, although it's a bit pricier, I think it's worth it. And also, this is kinda to everyone, if I respond to your post like a total idiot, it's cuz I am when it comes to this. I've never built a computer, and don't know what to look for, what a "boost clock" is, whatever. Oh, and if anybody could compare a nvidia GTX 780 to a GTX 1060/1070, or give me a site to compare them, that would be great. And oh again, I might be able to stretch my budget to $700, but I'd really prefer to stay at or under $600.

A GTX 1060 6GB will run you about 250-300 USD used or brand new and be faster than a GTX 780. Gamers Nexus is a fantastic reviewer. There's a lot of information, but it's reliable. Here's a test with a 780 Ti (no 780 sorry) and how it stacks up against the GTX 10 series. Well worth the read.

If you're okay with buying used then Reddit has a sub for that called hardwareswap. You can watch that for a deal. I suggest IFTTT to alert you when one is posted, but they usually go very quick. Prices are finally dropping back to normal after that mining craze.

Also if you weren't aware, PCPartPicker is great for putting a build together and looking at price trends.

Looks like 1060 is more powerful than 780. So you should get that, unless someone is throwing 780s at you for slim prices.

    And 3GB one

You should also note that the 1060 is much less power hungry and makes much less heat than 780 if that is a thing you care about

1070 is significantly more powerful than 1060 (and therefore both 780 and 780ti), but it is probably out of your reach.

If you want a good Graphics card, I would suggest getting a GTX 1080ti, it is very affordable, and if you want a really good cheap CPU, try getting the i5 6500, you should be able to spawn in about 5 cars with Medium graphics settings. Also I suggest at least 8 gigs of ram. Good luck with your PC though!

This seems wrong. Of course, that is the most powerful gaming card currently on the market, but everything comes at its price. One 1080ti alone will put author over his budget unless he literally steals it or something.
This card also is overkill for what author expects - "computer that actually runs the game". Not 1440p 144hz or 60 fps 4k Ultra, but just "runs the game".

i5 6500 is good enough, but why would you get that if you can get 7500 for similar price with it's added benefits like Optane support and 4k Netflix streaming support (probably no need of that currently, but you never know what you will want 3 years ahead from now).

But now when Ryzen is out, it is worth looking into AMD's offers. R5 1400 offers 4 extra threads over i5-6500 and R5 1600 adds 2 extra cores and 8 threads over i5-6500. I think BeamNG likes extra cores and threads.

Thanks for your input, but I have found the 1080Ti running about $500+, and seeing as my budget is about $800 (excluding windows, monitor, keyboard and mouse) the 1080Ti just wouldn't work. Although GPUs are extremely expensive right now, even after the digital currency mining stuff ends the 1080Ti still would probably be overpriced :/ And I certainly don't need a computer that will run BeamNG at 5000fps while also calculating all the solar eclipses of the billions of planets out there while also calculating the next 13 billion digits of pi. I just want a computer that will run 3, 4, 5 cars at a decent frame rate on decent graphics. I will check out the AMD lineup, unfortunately, that won't be compatible with the motherboard I have selected, so I'm leaning towards intel, but if AMD is that much better, I will definetely look into it.

Ha! That's almost a third of the price of my current build.
