bump. Had the same error just a few minutes ago, for the first time. I think its because the there is an update for the updater, but the updater is running so it cannot be written/overwritten.. that shouldnt be a problem, if there is a "Skip" button... but there isnt. There should be a separate "temporary" updater to update the updater (the updater would exit, start the "secondary updater" to update itself, then when finished it would exit and relaunch the original update), or this might just happen again in the future. The only solution now (BY MY OPINION of course (correct me if im wrong)) is to re-download the game, with hopefully an updated updater, or replace the updater with the original and ignore the updating until its fixed. Peace

EDIT : The game runs just fine though, and i also got the graphics settings reset, so i assume the update was successful to the point when it got a write error. cheers

Try rebooting. The launcher sometimes has issues with locking itself. :|

I didn't exactly want to reboot my whole machine (it takes 2 minutes to boot and another minute to log in) so I looked in task manager and ended a process that was called launcher. After that the updater worked. Thanks for the solution!

Does anybody know why was the launcher running in the background?

Possible that there is a phantom game process running? Check your task manager (CTRL + SHIFT + ESCAPE) and go to the processes tab, and make sure the updater is the only BeamNG-related thing running.

The other possibility is that you have installed it to a folder that Windows won't allow you to modify - this can happen in Program Files and also in the default install directory in C:\Users\<USERNAME\AppData\Local\

Maybe try reinstalling it somewhere "safe", like C:\BeamNG.

(I copied the update.exe and put it in a different file to make sure it was nothing in the \Beamng.drive folder to test your hypthesis.)

There are no phantom programs running

I would really just appreciate a new up-to-date Updater Temp fix file that can be downloaded.

@Above post, you do realize that you cant have the updater in a sperate folder, otherwise it wont have any files to check for updates for in the first place

Read what I said, The same thing happens when it is in the same folder. It was a test to see if the update.exe was actually capable of downloading what it was supposed to, that it cannot. The exact same problem seems to occur when everything is in the same folder after reading the log file.

read what i said, it wont even try to update, if it doesn't detect the game in the folder, also restart, run as admin, or try re-installing beamng, install to to AppData instead of program files as well, ummm, you might also try renaming the updater to update.exe.old run "launcher.exe" close beamng, then rename update.exe.old to update.exe (if beamng didnt already do that after running launcher.exe) if that doesnt work, then there's not much else that would (at least that i can think of)

I Moved it to C:\ Under the advice of an administrator (Not program files), and I have tried Everything else. Thanks for your advice.

The launcher cannot even run because the update.exe cannot install the Beamingx86.exe file

If your on windows 7 or higher, windows will set that as read-only also, you need to use APPDATA or your documents or something like that

I made sure it was not a read-only under properties. I have tried hundreds of things, my first 50 installation attempts were under my documents and appdata.

I am going to keep trying!

windows will just reset it back to read-only as SOON as you try to set it to readable, the properties window may still say its open, but its not, same if you do it via command line (running as admin or not) it just wont let you keep it with read-only disabled, there's nothing you can do there

Yeah, I have tried just about everything to run the program without ripping apart my computer and re-installing windows.

I am skeptical if that is the real problem, but the truth is that the updater does not work on my computer, and apparently many other's too after exploring the forums. Hopefully the problem gets fixed so I can actually get to do what I was promised when i bought the game. (Have access to future versions)

After trying to run the update.exe literally after approx. 40-60 times there has been a strange turn of events.

    BeamNG-drive-Alpha-test-download

Before my .Log file after the failed update would have a hash error and could not connect to the server.

I am going to look for the old log file to help resolve the issue for others.

Possibly updaters on some computers need a direct link open to www.beamng.com for them to get information from the sever, because that is all that i could come up with to why this suddenly worked.

That is most certainly *not* the case. Windows read/write permissions work absolutely fine. The only time they don't work is when using a file system that doesn't support them such as FAT32 as used on memory sticks etc.

Windows can actually take over your folders completely seamlessly.. I noticed it a few months ago, and it constantly makes me go in circles whenever it decides to take away my permissions.. since i'm the admin too, i can re-enable "full control", but it will be reset after a while.. i have no clue why it's like this, but it is. It's not bothering me, since it's easily fixable, but it's worth noting. If it gets beyond control, it will get formatted & reinstalled.
