Even though our big V8 boats can get 30mpg(36mpgUK) on the highway. My moms old Escort got about 33.

Yeah on the highway they don't get half bad fuel mileage.
As soon as it comes to getting that mass up to speed from a stop your mpg goes off the cliff.
And if you have a heavy right foot on top of that, you can say hello to the McDonald's dollar menu.
Big v8 boats are cool though.

tbh I have no idea what kind of mileage I get, my odometer stopped at 168,000. Prob around like 17 overall in the gmarq. I have a lead foot and dont do much highway travel though, so it could be better than what it is if a teenager wasn't driving it.

    (imported from here)

    Small 1.3ccm engine
    50kw 100Nm new
    Curb weight 1060kg, wagon
Was very happy going around dirt roads and country tarmac 1lanes at over 100km/h, with lots of wet grass and uphill, while carrying 9 people, same with that focus except for 2 in the trunk. 9x70=630 extra kg
Did actually get air time, car was not damaged anyhow.
    Don't underestimate small engines.
    fuel mileage is ~6,5l/100km combined
    OT:
Get a felcia if in Europe, get a mk3 golf if somewhere else.

It's not even about fuel efficiency, it's about power efficiency. If you make a 750hp car that isn't intended for going fast (for whatever reason), then that power is all "wasted", because all that horsepower goes to nothing.

If a car doesn't need to do 200mph and only needs to safely get past motorway speeds, and the manufacturer determines that 88hp is fine, then they'll go for 88hp because it's likely cheaper and you'll actually use its full potential.
