It's only a bump if the topic of the thread is irrelevant now. Like posting on a thread from a few months ago asking when the Hopper was coming out.

This crash occurred at Frozen Lake on November 17, 1965 at 2:47 pm. Joseph Megason, 22, was testing out his 1954 Burnside Special Drag. He had reached a very high speed (likely over 130 mph) when he lost control and slammed sideways into a tree, hitting the driver's door directly at over 100 mph.

Damage to the Burnside was extreme. The body was ripped from the frame upon impact and flew over 200 feet before becoming lodged in anofher stand of trees. Only the front fenders, the engine, and the fuel tank stayed attached to the frame. Surprisingly, there was no fire. The damage to the occupant compartment was so severe that the steering wheel was found pressed into the driver's seat, and the roof was crushed downward to the seat bottom. There was no survival space anywhere in the cabin.

Megason was killed on impact, probably dying in the first 0.01-0.02 seconds of impact.

The scene of the crash minutes after it happened was shown on local news that night as a warning against reckless driving.

Fortunately, the damage to the tree that the Burnside initially hit was fatal to the tree. The tree died less than two weeks later, on November 29. On December 24, the tree fell, and on January 8, 1966, it was taken by Megason's father, where it was burned and the ashes buried 7 feet under the bottom of the lake.

Here's a similar crash, involving another young man with a drag car at Frozen Lake. Date of crash was March 2, 1970. Danny Rickey, 19, was driving his brand new 1970 Gavril Barstow Drag in a speed test when he lost control at 125 mph, rolled on to his roof, slid for 3-4 seconds, and slammed upside-down into a tree at a high speed. The impact was behind the passenger seat area, so the impact damage was largely confined to the right rear seat area (the seat had been removed) and trunk. After crushing through those areas, the tree hit the reinforced rear axle, which violently stopped the car, causing extensive damage to the entire vehicle. The engine, transmission, and front sub-frame separated and flew over 100 feet from the remainder of the vehicle.

Rickey sustained severe neck and back injuries but made a full recovery. His shorts had extensive feces stains; it is believed that these stains arose in the seconds that he was sliding upside down before hitting the tree. He swore off of drag vehicles and now drives a Honda Accord.

    Another Frozen Lake smash-up.

David Holmes was born on March 7, 2001 and had gotten his license on his 16th birthday. About a month later, on April 19, 2017 at 4:06 am, he took his dad's 2017 ETK Kc6tx without permission. Data from the vehicle's data recorder shows that he reached speeds of over 150 mph. Driving at over 120 mph, he saw an intersection too late. He slammed on the brakes, skidded on the snowy road, and slammed the ETK into a tree. Fortunately, he had slowed to about 35 mph by the time he hit the tree with the passenger side of the front end.

The ETK, just purchased 8 hours earlier, was a total loss. David, a 5'3, 120 lb boy who hasn't hit his growth spurt, was unharmed. The steering wheel, knee, and passenger side curtain airbags deployed. The steering wheel airbag hit David in the face.
