How do you make mods?

Every now and then I download mods from this site, and I really like them, they are very detailed and nice. But I want to make mods too! I looked on youtube for any tutorials but found nothing at all. If any of you have a basic explanation or a link for a site/video on how to make mods that would be nice. Thanks!
