I don't think Steam running is actually required if the developer does a few things correctly. I have a copy of ArmA 2 and its expansions on Steam and I can start them up on their own. I think it might be something to do with the game making a registry entry for its CD code instead of relying on Steam possibly? Either way, it works.

But if you don't want to use the steam version, if it comes to that will you guys still have it here were you can download it and have it on your desktop, so you won't have to use steam to open it.

I would say this is the biggest problem. Many steam users do not have very powerful computers, and might complain because it lags.
The steam community has a REALLY stupid and immature side, and I can guarantee that every 13 year old kid with a netbook will be asking their parents for their credit cards, buying it, and completely failing to run it.

Hey at least it wont be the dev's problem...thats money in the pocket hahahaha...but I can see were you guys are going with this but maybe you guys could put in the video on steam (of course if you get on steam) that some of you guys with low-end computers might expierence lag/fps problems/ etc. etc. That might catch some peoples' eyes and might make them think...but then again if they purchase the game and totally ignore the warning it wont be the dev's faults...they put up a warning and the person decided to be stupid and ignore it. At least the dev's will get an income :D

well, scince valve/steam/whateverothernameshtheyhave has to get in contact with the devs to get it up (once its greenlit) i imagine the devs could probably see about having a HUGE warning when you click buy game, that says something like:

WARNING: this game will not run well, on the majority of laptops, netbooks, and oem desktops, due to not being powerful enough, other then a select few, please make sure your pc will run this game at a playable fps, by downloading the tech demo first, if you have already done so, and if your ok with whatever fps you happen to get, click the "CONTINUE" button below

or something like that anyway :p

It says that in the DayZ description, more or less, since it's an unstable early access alpha game, but people buy it and have a shitfit anyways. You should see the DayZ Steam forums.

The tricky part is the people who will stupidly complain and create bad press, will stupidly complain no matter how many warnings you put up.

no, i meant like, when you click, the buy game button, it opens up a new page, with a warning, and the continue button wont work till you've read it or something like that, then, if someone still complains, there just being a complete and total idiot, (or they happen to be related to that one guy who insisted that his pc was the most powerful one in history, which, well, it wasnt even close, oh, and said guy also said beamng looks like minecraft, so yeah, shows just how much of an idiot he was)

    :p

If someone who can't run it still buys it, yes, it'll be their fault, but if they complain it'll still create bad press (maybe less, but still).
