Second Impressions: The soft body physics are great, but you con only spend so long destroying stuff. Im enjoying the handling physics in as much as they appear to be modeling the contact between the tires and the road. which is great! The handling of the cars themselves leaves a lot to be desired though, all the RWD cars need a heap of throttle to be able to 'turn in' to a corner which is really strange... if you coast into a corner, without power, you just don't go round no matter how slow (over crawling pace) Also the difference between having traction and braking traction seems to be a completely linear thing, the car can just start sliding very slightly for no particular reason. Regaining traction seems more realistic, but the act of breaking traction seems very unrealistic. all in all i am pretty impressed though, good job!
BeamNG has taken cutting edge ideas and presented them in quite a nice package. The kinds of things they're doing mean they either give us early access and we deal with a few little bugs or they work on it for another 5 years. If you want stable, go for an arcade style racing game.
Rest assured that the handling (especially on the high power RWD cars) is going to be quite improved in the next update
Found out about BeamNG yesterday. Bought it after 5 minutes! Very impressed with the physics and level of detail. Keep up the excellent work Developers.
Ran across this after a mention on reddit, downloaded the tech demo and bought it 5 minutes later. Thoughts: The soft body model definitely bears similarities with Rigs of Rods, but the overall graphics and handling seems more realistic. I quite enjoyed exploring the environment, smashing things, and discovering the rudimentary AI mode, which is enough to provide a few hours of entertainment. I really enjoy these open-world, open-ended games, and hope that there will always be a free-roam option. Its very obviously not a complete game yet, but I'm happy to be along for the ride to see where it goes.
My first impression is that you guys are going to make a buttload of money. This is one of the funniest games I have ever played, with tons of stuff to do. Even as a new Alpha, played very stable for me with no lag and no noticeable bugs. I can't believe I stole this game for 15 Bucks....I am really, really excited to see what the future brings. I will be telling EVERYONE about this game.
I'm pretty certain I mentioned earlier that I am from Canada, but I do see what you're saying. Also, the main reason I took IT was because of my decision to become a Web Designer, which is one of the classes that I am taking this semester. Even if I decide that Web Design is not my thing, I will still have a list of other jobs I will be able to have when I get my degree in computer science. What I plan to do is take the 2 years at the college to get the certificate (i think that's what I get), before transferring to a university out of town to further my education and get the Degree in Computer Science. I am using student loans while I'm in college, and will probably do the same in university. All in all, by the time I finish, the total cost of my schooling could easily be around the $30,000-$40,000 mark. And with interest on the loan, who know how much I will really have to pay back. I'm not complaining about college, or about the cost, I've just made my decisions and I am not deviating from them. Oh yeah, and also, I'm looking for a first vehicle right now as well, which also adds to my list of expenses. All in all though, if we really want to get into this discussion, this is not the thread in which to do so, and I will generate another thread to continue the discussion on college and its cost if we really wanted to. **EDIT** Have had the tech demo for some time now and i'm still loving it! Physics are amazing, if a slight bit glitchy at times, but that's OK!
Downloaded the Drive yesterday. Been playing for couple of hours. Some first thoughts, pros and cons: + Graphics are nice, and despite reading warnings about game being resource hungry, my PC can (just) keep it at avergae 60 FPS. Just don't make it any haevier. + Physics are awesome + My Logitech DFGT wheel worked right away with no hassle (it randomly stops working but a restart helps), I was expecting some mapping to be needed + Driving is challenging, but fun with the lower powered vehicles... - ...but impossible with high-power RWD:s like Civetta or the Porsche mod. They will spin out of control when driving straight line when flooring it. - I was really disappointed that there is no replay tool. I mean come on, this game is about crashing and should be about replaying those crashes I think it will be a really cool game once it's finished.
Just wait for the race update to drive the Bolide It is massively improved - no more veering in random directions - it drives arrow-straight now and is much easier to handle. The Porsche was just some found mesh slapped the old flawed Bolide chassis. The updated Bolide coming in the race update has revised tires, alignment, suspension geometry, and suspension tuning. Replay tool - we may plan to add this in the future Keep in mind it would have to record a ton of data, since each vehicle is composed of around 400 nodes, simulated 2000 times per second, so it would probably have a big performance hit if you turned replay recording on.
Has there been some sort of update I don't know about, Because I've noticed today that the cars brakes are much more affective. I park the car & I don't even need the handbrake, it just parks perfectly still?
Must be a placebo effect - we haven't released any update yet IIRC the regular brakes could always hold cars on hills, just not the parking brake (until now). However, we are now troubleshooting a friction bug with heavy vehicles that causes the brakes to not work at all on an incline (the T75 and other heavy vehicles are affected). The H45 Cabster seems to be at the current upper limit of weight for vehicles that can hold on a 15-20 degree slope with just the parking brake. The T75 will slide slowly down a 5 degree slope with the rear wheels locked up We have narrowed it down and it is definitely the weight, not the friction coefficient or anything like that. We tried adding a bunch of weight to the D15 and observed the same sliding behavior on slight inclines. We will fix it
Unable to make more than 1 miles before the car drift without reason, happy to know that their is a update coming soon. Also i'm stuck with the keyboard even if the F310 have same button as X360 (from my dumb user eyes), hope a fix is coming soon.. On keyboard at least I can tell it is (like every young simulation project) more mathematical than realistic. At some point you must cheat to give the game unique spirit, but you know that and will find the right balance between E=mc² & NFS-Rival.. Overall I was hesiting between SpinTires and BeamNG since 2 week, not that I prefer your game, but you set the bar high and obviously need this 17$ Good luck !
They aren't trying to find a balance between real-to-life physics and NFS arcade-y bullshit. They are going for an accurate, real-to-life vehicle simulator. They don't have to cheat physics to give the game spirit. And "more mathematical than realistic"??? What the hell does that even mean?!?!
