    Take the time you need.
If they have a ColMesh and LOD's that's the optimal model type, however, if alls you can do is add ColMesh that's fine too.
I won't be making significant in-map progress for the rest of the month as I have some other things to do (readying more textures, trying to get the terrain the way I want it, getting models scripted up and ready for Roane County so I can transfer them in one lump, etc).
So I mean, you have weeks and weeks, if you need it take it but if you get motivated, and create something (they don't have to be super-fancy, actually, sometimes less detail is more), just make sure it doesn't look too dated.
Generally if you tile a 1024x1024 pixel texture on them they look quite well indeed, just use temporary textures and i'll put something nice on them. I will change the texture pointers in the model via an xml editor as needed.

I am hoping Beamng.drive comes through with tiled terrain support, it'll enable me to surround the city with more area vs just making the city itself.

If you don't know how to install a mod manually, I don't know what to say... Maybe something along the lines of "Google it" would work?

I doubt the reply being simply 'good', looking at this thread, seems to be the beamng forum equivalent to the Philippines, if members where Canada and spam was 2000 tons of crap

We can always use people to donate more building models with collision meshes in them, if folks are growing impatient, wanting progress. Even re-doing the existing models to have collision would be a large help.
Sure I could show something for it but I can't really make models, only re-skin existing ones and that gets old fast & really limits what I can do with a map.
No one wants to look at an empty bunch of streets and a boring non-detailed terrain.
Well, if I missed anyone you can always google Detroit videos on youtube if you want some empty streets.
There's a large game update coming and this mod has been on the back-burner while I was working on other things.
I may have something to show for this by, or shortly-there-after the holidays. Don't expect this to pop up overnight. It needs to be done right, the first time, not as an afterthought otherwise the FPS will be poo, and we already have Roane County if we want low FPS.

That being said, I should have more time for this soon, but with a recent tooth extraction a week ago that's only now subsiding pain-wise and discomfort-wise, it's been slow as I have been taking some time off from BeamNG mapping (I needed it, goin' bonkers in here).

I am posting an update about Generic City 'remake' progress.
The map directory setup has changed slightly and I am re-doing the system for a planned OS update from 7 to 10 version of Windows.
I have some models, though not enough for a full city.
I need modular highway pieces, for a raised highway. It would be really nice if someone could make some pieces like this.
The shape tool in the editor is and has been broken for the last year, so I can't make pieces with decent collision automatically, without using up 1/4096 object slots on each one (sounds like a lot, but it's not, I've used up 3300 of these without any buildings or trees at all - just in one map).
I could always use more skyscraper textures. It's okay if you even just grid-texture the walls, and put some generic flat asphalt for the roof, I care not. I can re-do textures easily here.
I will break ground on this after the holiday, just after new year. You have my word on this.
    What's done what's not?
*I need more building and infrastructure models, modular so they can be pieced together so we have something awesome!
*I have all the textures I could ever want/need etc, as I can make them here and can easily make tile-able stuff for buildings etc, from free and other rights-free sources on the internet (manual skill, not automatic stuff in programs).
*I have a 'tester' terrain etc started, it's not worth much time, or even the space on a backup drive, but it's there.
*I have all my GB+ of models and textures (road textures included) from Tennessee Roane County map, that will get suburbia off to a great jump-start. It won't help much for a downtown full of huge buildings though! Need more of those.
*If people really want to see this project get somewhere in a reasonable amount of time, donate models please.
*I have a terrain made up from near Detroit/Chicago areas of the USA. It'll likely be the one with two large land-masses, mountains for a natural map border, water to most all of one side, a river running through it, and water on all of at-least one side. It'll be a typical 4k x 4k imaged terrain, roughly the size of Nevada Interstate so that it's easy to work with. The size should be roughly 6km x 6km like Nevada Interstate is (for those that don't know).
*West Coast USA has given many models and such, I now have telephone poles, fences, a few more houses, but nothing from downtown as it's all one big model pretty much. If someone wants to cut apart some of those buildings, with collision, great, please do!

Just wanted to post an update to somehow try to assure folks this isn't vapor-ware.

BeamNG version 0.12 will come with editor updates, including a working shape editor and much less crashes.
So, I won't have anything to show until I get that shape editor in and can put my model layers I made into single mods for good use. Then I can lay those models out (they are a 'kit' of streets, city and suburban, and lots of highway chunks). Then I can actually use them considering I made them, like last fall-summer or whenever.

So as I mentioned before, no, no things to show for progress (worth looking at, that is), I will give you guys some eye candy when I get the 0.12 update (same time you guys get it), and show what I've made in action.

Until then, you can try out the recent Roane County update that just went live a few weeks ago, if you have not thus far.

So no, no it's not dead, you'll just have to take my word for it - until the game update comes!
The Burnout Paradise map project is also waiting for this same update, so you'll not only have this, but that one too!

    EDIT:
Just a side note I feel I should re-mention; the models from my Roane County TN mega-map will also be seen here, so the ones I am making for that map, which will be useful here, will be already done. So while it will have the same 'feel' or 'theme' to it, it won't feel like such copy-paste disaster as one may imagine.
So all that work that's already done, behind the scenes, is done, countless dozens if not more, hours worth. The more I work on Roane County TN before I get this off to a running start, the more I'll have to work with and the less double-work I'll have to do. Yes, yes that means it's likely going to be another 'huge' download for this map when it hits, however, that being said, it shouldn't really be much if any bigger. You just can't expect a huge map with the graphics of a city to be weightless on your hard drive, can you?

So the editor is updated, it's still not 100% fixed with the shape editor, there's a script edit I can make to the game scripts themselves to see if it'll work, which I'll keep folks posted on.
I am actively trying to learn blender again - if only to clean up sketchup models i made, and give them collision (and there-for infinite use in the forest brush). I have someone who will sponsor my tutorials if need be (I know how to get around in it I just don't know quite how to translate what I do in it into something usable in Beamng).
Now that I've got Roane County TN USA running a whole bunch better, I can use a big chunk of those highly optimized models to start.
While I have a tester terrain, I don't have much else. I have some sample terrains but not much has 'clicked' really.

    Then it dawned on me.
Why don't I just plop this into So-Cal Interstate, in which I wanted to build a town in when I built it (but had no clue whatsoever, two years ago, at the time how to do.
Not only would you get a town, but the about 100 miles of roads in that map (or something close), all centered around a beautiful lake.
I basically have most of a city's worth of buildings, sans the tall skyscrapers, and such. I could always build those with box-shaped blocks and apply window 'decals' (read: 2d objects that act like stickers, I've done that all over Roane County).
So what I am saying is this:
    Yay or Nay?
Yay: Putting this in So-Cal Interstate map would be awesome, it's already got loads of highways just begging for a big city.
    OR
Nay: That would suck, but you PROMISED you'd reboot this map (even though technically, I'm transplanting it into a map many multitudes bigger, with a large lake in the middle and mountains around the edges).

IT WOULD NOT be a copy of 'West Coast' (So-Cal has been out for 2 years about, but I've never done anything with it since the 0.8.x game version). It would get a temperate, green-ish lush terrain in the middle, by the lake, where it would make sense, and a port to one side. It would be entirely fun, and would likely still run better than the So-Cal map does now (read: completely not optimized, my local version here runs better than Nevada Interstate).
Let me know here or via private message.
This project will be kicking off in a few weeks and I'd like to know everyone's sentiment since I basically would have to rebuild the map from scratch ANYWAYS, so might as well use something like So-Cal Interstate, because it's a perfect donor map with it's complete (99%) road system and not even a single building - or even a sign.

For what it's worth, the Youtube car-crash channel guys are backing me on this (using So-Cal Interstate), but feel free to disagree! You'll get a better product faster with me using So-Cal as a donor map, BUT, again, I do want opinions here. This entire map could drop right in the central plains area of So-Cal and still have room.

    --Get back to me folks!

P.S. I am fixing AI problems in Canyon of Speed (updating with permission), and helping the Beamng.Paradise map project also, I will be kicking this off by the end of the month though now that Roane County is all fixed up FPS-wise.

this could be a really awesome idea. I don't see the cons in this except for ram and maybe fps?

Going to do my best to keep FPS nice by using larger buildings and visibility-blocking elements where absolutely needed, this should help, since I have a general idea now of how much this game can process before FPS ends up in the toilet.
RAM usage won't be worse than Roane County but I will try to make it significantly better, hence some a lot of the outskirt's desert terrain will remain, as the large amounts of trees/forests eat up the RAM in Roane County and I don't want a repeat here (this map is also one quarter the size).
    Roane county RAM use:
3.2~4GB for forests (forget exact, changes from version to version a bit)
    1.5GB (+ or -) for buildings/civilization related stuffs
