So that architecture is still being used today and has been for a while, but it will eventually have to be replaced, but what do you think will happen?
ARM and Snapdragon's 835 is taking hold, already in two machines and is more performant than Atoms and more power efficient. (I wonder how it goes with CoreM). But these Snapdragon machines are really expensive, like you see atom tablets around $200! whereas these ARM ones are high performance ones around $600+.

Sorry, but Atoms are not that good. Snapdragon and Exynos will replace them soon.

Atoms also have lower tdp than the 835 and importantly maintains x86 legacy code backward compatibility, this is huge. Windows 10 on 835 *emulates* x86, poorly, very very poorly. Web browsers are unusably slow, the only reason edge runs on it is because they recompiled edge to arm, same for all the default Microsoft applications, they aren't x86 apps being emulated.

In the non windows world, you're quite right. Arm is generally a better choice. In the windows world, atom any day, also certain legacy applications

Microsoft said that their x86 emulation was really fast but i didn't believe it, i think i remember seeing something somewhere within the neighbourhood of 80% performance retained through x86. But i don't know how they would measure this.
maybe more apps will be recompiled to ARM, maybe that will be the demise of x86 in tablets!
Still quite odd seeing Atoms in $200 tablets when they can do more than a premium soc in some cases. Also didn't Atoms have an ARM-X86 converter built in, i think they did, it had a performance hit of course but it was usable.

Atom has no arm compatibility no. Don't know if Microsoft are going to let people deploy arm applications yet or force the emulation though. The emulation is really not as fast as they say and hammers battery, native arm binaries are way forward where applicable.

If they do allow 3rd parties to deploy on ARM I'd be interested in getting one

I'm an Intel user. The last three computers I have built or bought all feature Intel processors.

In my opinion, Intel has intentionally slowed development and reduced value to customer due to a lack of market competition.

When finally threatened by AMD's Ryzen, they responded poorly by pushing out new chips that were unworthy competitors.

I can imagine a similar situation with ARM and Qualcomm. They advance, Intel panics and stabs itself in the foot.

Just my thoughts, correct me if I'm inaccurate.

yeah i think this might happen. They might do something stupid and have a high clocked atom architecture which will be inefficient. Besides they can't do graphics so in that regard they aren't competitive.
On the other hand it is good that Windows convertibles are finally getting decent graphics. Like the X5 Z8350 vs SD 835 is like 120GFlops vs 570GFlops. Snapdragon is just out of this world.
