You're not with Gimp! I don't know about BCT/DXT5, perhaps same as BC3/DXT5 or not! coming from Photoshop plugin or paint?

In attachment dds I export with Gimp

I added a half size 2048x1024, only 2.66MB rather 10MB, better and enough to render in the game

Ok, but I don't have a BCT/DXT5 export format. Perhaps this is not the same plugin! I use Gimp v2.8.20 and the "gimp-dds-win64-3.0.1" plugin, x64 bits version. I can send to you in attachment if you need.

Below the correct compression for the 3 images needed to get a perfect rendering in BNG:

-BC1/DXT1 for the specular map, images with "_s" in the name, automatically exported without alpha.

-BC3/DXT5 for diffuse map, images with "_d" or "_c" in the name, you can put the alpha at 95% or less to give a few shininess, glossiness, brightness, rendered in the game, for metal parts by example.

-BC5/ATI2(3Dc) for the normal map, images with "_n" in the name, you can do perfect normal map with a usefully Gimp plugin (gimp-normalmap 1.2.3 for GIMP 2.8), used to deform a shape like tires, not modeled with all the details, but the normal map make the job deformation.

To know the exact compression needed for the different images required, there is a wiki page, https://wiki.beamng.com/Exporting_Textures_-_DDS_Files

Tell me if you don't have the same plugins version than me!

Usually, about material.cs and jbeam files, I convert line breaks to Unix (LF) instead of windows (CR + LF) with Notepad++ -->Edit --> Convert line breaks to Unix (LF). It a good practice.

A second thing, I transform too the Spaces into Tabulations with Notepad++ -->Edit -->Treatment of Spaces --> Transform Spaces into Tabulations.

It's a good way to clean the file from unwanted hided characters.

I do it with your jbeam and material.cs, and this is perhaps the reason it's working fine by me and don't working for you! oupsss, sorry normally it's not that important, but the exception confirms the rule...really sorry!

it seems to work now. i have made 8 skins since this post and they all look great. i use gimp 2.8.22 and i dont know what plugin i use it just so you can export as a dds file. and i use just plain notepad for all my things. one more question while im here how do you make a skin pack do you just get all the skins .zip file that you want and zip them all up into one folder and put that into the mods folder or is more complex. thanks for all your help:D

In first, congrats for your progress

Yes Gimp, ... A perfect workflow, which you can do almost anything in BNG! Notepad++ has some useful advanced options but Notepad work normally fine (but better an advanced text editor, because the formatting of text...up to you to see what suits you best!)

For the skin pack you want to create, the best way to understand the structure is to look in an existent mod, like the excellent "Global Police Skin Pack", https://www.beamng.com/threads/global-police-skin-pack.32348/

Download the mod, in a folder you use for working on your computer, unzip it. This is the formal and required structure for a mod, except the folder "mod_info" automatically created when you submit you mod for the repo.

Don't hesitate to ask me, I can also check before you submit it for approval, as you wish!
