A continuation of my quest to make a worthy normal map. So, now I have acquired GIMP (and it's a mess like it always was) and started experimenting. I loaded a stock Pessima interior normal map into it, exported it as BC3n/DXT5n with mipmaps (getting this error in process: ) and got a semi-transparent, orange colored image (attached to this post). I tested it in Blender: Stock normal map Normal map that has been through GIMP How do I process normal maps using GIMP without ruining them?
Importing BC3 normal maps isn't immediate, as most programs does not read them properly. A way to do that is to open the normal map in Blender's UV/Image editor, and re-save it in another format then (PNG for example). Then you should be able to use open it in GIMP, PS, etc. without issues.
The image is now rosy and semi-transparent, which has affected its qualities. Any way to prevent that?
Uh, that's what happen to me if I open a BC3 file directly in Photoshop. What you did exactly? And how did you get that .dds?
1. Opened official normal map in Blender image editor 2. Saved it as a png file 3. Opened png file in GIMP 4. Exported it as a BC3n/DXT5n normal map with mipmaps
I hate the part where every programs calls this specific format in different ways. GIMP calls BC5 both DXT5 and 3DC. The file above is a BC5/DXT5 (so not a normal map) DXT5 is for textures. 3DC is specific for normal maps. You need to use the second, this is how it shows in the GIMP exporter:
