I want to get the most I can out of BeamNG performance wise (i.e. keeping to 60 fps as much as possible).

    Specs:
    16 GB 1866 MHz DDR3 RAM (8GB x 2)
AMD Radeon R9 Fury X 4 GB HBM (liquid cooled)
Intel Core i7 4790k (liquid cooled, tweaked to run all 4 cores at max turbo speed)
    512 GB Crucial SATA-III SSD
    800W PSU

On some maps, I occasionally go as low as 1 FPS, and I'd like to know why that is and if anything can be done about it. I doubt my hardware is to blame.

I know... but that isn't helpful when video card prices are through the roof right now. I plan to upgrade to a 1080 TI once I can get one for $699 and not $1000+.

Not necessarily, just depends on what you need.
That card is excessively powerful, there should be no reason it dips that low. Is it thermal throttling? What resolution/maps are you on?

Definitely not thermal issues. I did some experimenting and it seems that some of the mod maps were the issue. The vanilla maps are 60 FPS consistently.
