Again, it's probably not supposed to be an family-purpose vehicle. Also, remember this is an rotary vehicle, not like your SAAB.
good god what has become of the automotive industry. Car manufacturers are clusterfucking with so many other manufacturers. And the head designers have their heads so far up their asses it came out the top again.
Don't forgot the gas-guzzling Hummer, with an even lower MPG Highway. The H3 was at 18, which is lower than the Suburban!
You guys are hopelessly pessimistic elitists. The AMG GT Coupe isn’t the end of the auto world and I think it’s a good looking car. Sportbacks are cool cars, and the RX-8 was cool too. Why do you guys have to hate everything? Come on, be a car guy and like cars.
I have never understood the hate on the rotary for its "abysmal" fuel milage. I mean, first off... its a sports car, so who really cares what kind of fuel milage it gets as long as it's fun. Second... yes, it is cheap enough that a normal person can afford it, so they will be more concerned about fuel mileage, but then again, let's circle back around to the abysmal fuel mileage. If you have a 1.3L Wankel, that's about 660cc's per rotor per combustion cycle. One revolution of the eccentric shaft creates 2 complete combustion cycles. A normal engine needs 2 revolutions of the crankshaft to make a full thermodynamic cycle though, so keeping that in mind... a 2 rotor wankel engine spun 720 degrees will now compleat 4 combustion cycles. Taking that 660cc's and multiplying it by 4 then gives you a comparable displacement of a 2.6L 4cyl engine. Another thing to remember is that it doesn't create a lot of torque... its mostly all revs, so cruising around on the highway, at 60mph your gonna be up at 3000+rpm's the whole time to maintain that speed. My SAAB on the other hand (I also have one) Churns a measly 2300rpm's at 60mph, and my Corvette... hehe... well it will barely be cranking 1700rpm's. RPM's at speed have a HUGE effect on your fuel economy, so if the RX8 had another gear... perhaps the numbers would be a bit more respectable. Most of the RX8 guys usually say that they keep the revs up just so the car has pickup when they hit it. But if your on the highway, you don't need that. They also say that you can drive it down in the 2000 to 1500 range, but it just becomes a bit gutless when you hit the gas.... as you do... So, my proposition is that if the RX8 had a 7 or perhaps 8 speed gearbox with an airplane gear in it or two... I think that the fuel milage would be much more respectable for the comparable displacement... but even still... its not as bad as everyone seems to make it out to be.
RX8's are also pretty cheap to buy. You can pickup one for £1k (£695 is cheapest legit looking one). A fun, good looking and handling car for not a lot of initial investment. Not to mention being rather quirky with the rotary engine and bomber doors. Quirkiness being imo a rather overlooked factor in cars, since that is a large part of what makes a car interesting. Of course running costs are high for these cars. But if you have the money, there is far far worse out there.
Out of pure interest, how much does the cheapest non-legit looking one cost? And in what state is it?
Tesla use loads of battery shaped cells (like 18650s but slightly bigger) but the i-Pace uses "Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt" pouch cells (like what you would use in RC aircraft or whatever)
£550 for two of them. Apparently one of them drives, but the other has been standing for a long time and doesn't start. There is only one picture of one of them, plus both are gonna have issues. Possibly engine rebuild required, since that seems to be a common-ish issue for the RX8. https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201804035170218
But ive heard of ones wich make more than that maybe theres something you can do so they last longer? Or are they just driving without doing anything
I like cars. That's why I despise cynical marketing rip-offs like the new Merc. And no, it doesn't look that good either, IMO.
The only thing that bothers me about the AMG GT being a 4 door is just that it's being redundant since the CLS exists. Like it just doesn't make sense, "Oh, I want something that's just as powerful and sporty as an AMG GT, but I want 4 doors." Literally the C63, E63, and the CLS 63 exists for that reason. And supposedly it's going to be competing against the upcoming BMW 8 series or M8 "Gran Coupe" which is also just as stupid and redundant since the M6 Gran Coupe, just like the CLS 63 also literally exists for that reason and why I think the 8 series/M8 be a coupe only.
What is wrong with having two cars from a single manufacturer that compete? (especially from a consumer standpoint) If you are in that market, it just means you have more to pick from. It also means that the manufacturer can offer two slightly different experiences to people in that market. Of course it's extra R&D for the manufacturer, but if they think they will both sell, it may be worthwhile.
I was clearly the only one defending the RX-8 at first. I mean, give Mazda an break, they release plenty of quality vehicles. Plus, people loved the RX-7's rotary, but the RX-8 seems to be bashed, even though it was the last rotary vehicle from Mazda. Also, here's some addicted Buick concept for you guys. You're welcome!
FWD only. It's kind of an oddball really, being optioned out as a comfortable city car rather than what a typical Subaru buyer would go for. I guess it's one of those situations where the cool AWD models were saved and the less desirable ones were mostly forgotten about.
I don't know, from what I've heard from others, including several employees at the Mercedes dealership I hung out with when I took my car in for service, they said that the 4 door AMG GT would be internally competing against the CLS and the E class to some extent, or some said that it'll be up against the Porsche Panamera, or whatever else. Another thing that comes to mind is the last generation of the Volkswagen Scirocco. Would've fit within the US market just fine, but apparently it'd affect the Golf GTi sales, and other currency exchange issues and whatnot, wouldn't make any money with them importing it.
