It's assigned to the mobo? I didn't know that. Crap.

    I've never heard that before.

After research, it seems that the answer varies. And if it does invalidate your license, usually all it takes is a call to a microsoft robot to get it transferred.

I guess. The cheapest used 6-core phenom is about the same $$$ as the i3 bundle, and I think the i3 beats it. The best 6-core is more than the best i5+mobo combo.

Just get the i3 bundle or the likes. Yes the OS is tied with the motherboard, but you can simply call Microsoft and they will re-license your Windows for you. It's not that big of a hassle, really.

Phenom is beginning to get outdated, and not handling modern games very well. I'd much rather you get something up to date that you know will run almost every game out there, then something that will be hard to find, hard to get support for, hard to replace if it dies, and in general just not as good of a product.

It may not be the cheapest option, but it's the best you can do for now, as it will set you on your way for a few years at least, or until you get more money to throw an i5 or the likes in there.

Ok but which one should I get first? The phenom x6 or the 260x?

Just get the gosh darned i3! It's better, faster, cooler, cheaper. Get it. I think the i3 will help you more than the 260x right now.

Beware that that case will not accept a full ATX motherboard... so make sure if you're keeping it to get an mATX mobo.

Just get a cheap mid-tower ATX case then. You can find fairly good ones for under $50

ya I don't want to get a case. basicly all I wanted was a cpu or gpu upgrade.i would have to replace the tower, mobo, cpu, and gpu. that is a computer build there. I don't want to do that.

Then as I said... get an mATX motherboard rather than an ATX.

Yes. That is the form factor of the motherboard it comes with. It should work.

I take no responsibility for any actions taken due to my advice.
