what the hell are you talking about, linux is linux, period, not trolling either, i have tried running linux on specs similar to the op's (extremely old versions to) and it refused to run without lagging like crazy, so i can't believe you
What the hell are you talking about, mate? Linux is simply the core of MANY operating systems. It can be modified in any way necessary to have it run on ANY grade of hardware. There are hundred of Linux distributions for pretty much anything you might want to run it on.
I personally find it hilarious that you claim it can run on phones yet not the superior specced computer.... For future reference peeps. My distro of choice is bodhi.
So that you produce a nice clean note and prevent thumb injury (I find it easier to not use one tbh) As for photo's. Its an old internet meme. Don't think its particularly applicable to the achievement of assembling a PC from old parts. But some people like pictures.
Lol : ) clueless user is clueless. Even Raspbian can run with GUI without lagging too bad. A p4 and 512mb of ram would do well.
http://www.android-x86.org/ I've run puppy linux on a 700mhz pentium 3 and 256mb of ram. It was good for playing music and webpage browsing only basically. A 240p youtube video would just barely work. It wasn't unusable though. That machine has windows xp on it at the moment.
http://www.slitaz.org/en/ This is running on my gateway with a p2 300mhz with 64mb ram. It runs 140p youtube videos fine...................... that is cause it has ati rage 32mb dedicated gpu for a laptop
I just lost all the respect I held for you. Windows is the OS I use most often, but proficiency in Linux/GNU is something I find quite important. Also, elementaryOS is distro of the millennium.
If logoster continues to go down the path he is going, he will be in red banner waters, because at this point, this is just arguing with a reinforced tungsten-carbide box. (If that isn't possible, then a normal reinforced steel box can be used here too.)
Both my laptop and desktop are running windows (8.1 and 8.0 respectively), I use alot of windows based software the majority of the time and can't quite make the 100% linux switch. But I do run bodhi in virtualbox very regularly and utilise the redhat server at university via SSH as a web server (and as a backup drive actually). My raspberry pi has a damaged SD card slot but I used to use that alot (the SD slot is a huge design flaw I think, very prone to breakage). Proficiency in linux to me is also important. I prefer to run without a GUI personally. The pi was entirely headless with SSH access only.
I do have a question though: Is Linux that hard to learn? I can write in code, but if I have to learn the equivalent of PC Swahili to use it, there might me a problem. I may try Linux one day.
Nah. It really depends on what you intend to do with it though. There is a lot that pushes you to CLI, though. Try a live distro.... a live cd is very helpful sometimes as well.
I dunno, Linux Mint or Ubuntu you could get by entirely graphically I reckon, although my old mint installation had a shell running as part of the desktop, I preferred using it. Also might be worth trying out virtualbox as a live CD alternative. It would allow you to have a full linux install without altering your hard disk and risking your existing windows install. A live CD is unmodifiable, any programs you install or settings you change etc will be lost when you reboot. Virtualbox they will remain. Virtualbox isnt fully representative of running linux on your actual bare hardware though whereas a live CD would be. I would think for someone learning to use linux, the performance hit of virtualbox shouldnt matter. The non permanence of a live CD could be beneficial when it comes to accidentally cocking everything up though. Ubuntu or Linux Mint would probably be the best choice for a linux newcomer. Fully functional system straight out of the box, can do almost everything graphically but the command line is always there when you need it. The command line isn't hard either, but it would probably be best to just slowly ease into it. I use it near exclusively now, others may prefer to not touch it with a barge pole. - - - Updated - - - I definitely think people exaggerate the difficulty of linux though. There are people using python on raspberry pi's (running linux) to build robots, insignificant you say? Consider that some are under 10.
I am currently about to try out Ubuntu (ON A VIRTUAL MACHINE, but I did get a disc so if I like it enough, I can do 8 and Ubuntu side by side somehow). Wish me luck.
ubuntu kind of blows. I used to used it on my computers back when i was rocking pentium 4's because I didn't know how to pirate windows. 10.04 and 10.10 worked well but all after that were kind of unresponsive even on a pentium D. Not fast computers by any means but with windows 7 they were both usable for youtube and whatnot, not so much ubuntu. I actually liked unity though. I can't really recommend anything though because I haven't been using linux anything in quite a while.
