    I don’t know why everyone is debating if the base is a Fiat or a VW. I clearly knew the answer ages ago.

    I wish it could be a bannable offence to compare game content to IRL cars.

    This really isn't what I want to see threads full of when I read about ingame content. I'd love it if you could keep it on topic instead.

    How about we move the whole "Beam cars IRL" thing into one (separate from here) thread.

    I'm not seeing any argument, can't really understand what you are on about there?

    Oooh… I wonder if the Piccolina will have a similar floorpan design to the beetle - just about every major mechanical component securely affixed to the frame and not the easily removable body.

    I wonder if we're going to see fiberglass "kit cars" for the Piccolina at some point:

    All of the vehicles posted above are built upon VW bones The seventies was an interesting time in the "parts" advertising section of most auto magazines.

    If I remember correctly, that was tried once, and I think it started a flamewar.

    In the years of Piccolina development (mid of 50s) it was clear that unibody has lots of benefits for this type of vehicle.

    Shame.

    Maybe make an older, bigger (say, '50-'62) Autobello car on a separate frame ? Design based on early-post-war Italian compacts (Fiat 1100), mechanicals based on the ones in early post-war DKWs (yes, this means 2-stroke).

    Why do people tend to mix country and manufacturer of car used as its basis (e.g. Italian car based on German car, Japanese car based on American car)?
    Speaking of this car, I don't see any similarity in design with Beetle. What more, there's more Subaru 360's design in this car than Beetle IMO.

    Yes, you're right.

    Design of the body is combination of Subaru 360 and Fiat 600.

    Engine is flat 4 air-cooled just like in the Beetle. Subaru had an 2 cylinder 2 stroke air-cooled engine. The Fiat 600 had an I4 water-cooled engine in construction very different to the engines in Beetle and Subaru, which were both air-cooled.

    Suspension is also much closer to the Beetle and Subaru than to the Fiat.

    I can only hope that since this car was produced for 16 years (1957-1973). It will have at least a lot of different parts, like bumpers, Interior and trim parts to name a few.

    By the way, what's the model year of the car pictured?

    Side blinkers shall be white (mandatory in Italy up to 1960, still allowed/mandatory for front blinkers before 1977 and definitively outlawed that year), not amber. And passenger side mirror was a rarity in cars this size, most vehicles didn't even come with driver side mirror untill it became mandatory (in Europe, for all new cars in 1975, for all circulating vehicles in 1977).

    How could that be both a bannable offense and off-topic? All of the vehicles in some shape or form are based off IRL ones. Some are obvious even (LeGran/Cutlass Ciera). I think that it counts as on-topic.

    Makes them a bit more unique that way?

    I see all three.

    Here's some of the things I see in the Piccolina. I know I've said some of these already, but bear with me.
    Overall shape = 600 and Beetle
    Engine (at least the one we got a picture of) = Beetle
    Suicide doors = 600 and 360
    Bumpers = 600 and Beetle
    Top mounted fender indicators (as pointed out by IIRC @fufsgfen) = Beetle and 600
    Taillights = Beetle

    Including the vents.

    Overall shape tho is like 90% 600 and a 10% of vague Beetle elements. Essentially because the car looks bigger than the 600, but the overal shape of it is almost a perfect match.

    Beetle got some late '30s/early '40 styling you don't see here at all, the most obvious difference being flush/integrated fenders and squircle windshield and rear window.
    600 had suicide doors too.
    Again, 600 (and quite a few cars of the time) had them too. They worked as integrated front-and-side blinkers until separation became mandatory in 1959.

    Autobello tho has both: fender-mounted "teardrop" blinkers and front blinkers in the nose...:confused:

    Indicators in the hood could be a Deluxe feature, with basic model being more basic without trim and other parts. That's my best quess.
