A blighted train yard in the worn out area would be amazing. Also how about a version of the abandoned Packard plant in Detroit.
It was a beautiful old building. I can't wait to see more of the Blighted area.

We were driving down Baltimore and I saw this beautiful 1919 Brick building "F.L Anderson Fire Dept Supplies"

I just wanted to share this because I thought it was a great example of early 1900s Brick Building style, with it's aged masonry and it's fading paint.

I think it would be a good template for something along the lines of an old Mill or Factory.

For sure, some like these are going next to the highway, across from the mall. I love those old industrial buildings like that.
Nice find! That's definitely some turn-of-the-century stuff there, and the factory opposite of it isn't much newer (early 1900s).
There will be quite a few oldies like these (both sides of the road in the shot). I might even be able to screenshot some of that stuff and edit it into BeamNG (often I use it for pattern, and layer good textures over it in higher detail/resolution). Lots of my window textures and even some door textures game from those drive-by shots or internet picture shots. I will likely do some of these industrial buildings when I do the housing projects. These and the museum (it's somewhat random which one I do next) are coming after the mall is in.
So nice suggestions, love these, as this is great because I want to build what the community wants to see/interact with in a map.
    Great work @¿Carbohydration? and @silvermanblu .
I only have those two shots of the train at the moment. I believe I linked the thread where you could find it, but if I didn't, look up in the FORUMS category for vehicles > land. You should see a pretty well popular TRAINS thread, it will appear in there when it's out. It's nearly done, as it's in the game and functional already it just needed fine-tuning a bit. I will surely have more shots when I make another station though, that I can promise you, as the station would be a touch plain without it I'd reckon.

In other news, after *TWO DAYS OF WORK* (well a good 8~12 hours easily), I finally got the end of the lot done. This is part where the mall comes out towards the road (there's also part of a rather plain at the moment back-lot which will be for truck deliveries, staff, etc).

Where the curbing juts out (left side of last shot, where the fire-lane otherwise is), is where the entrances to the anchor stores will be, there will be a mall entrance by the brick (left side, second last shot), which is in a corner of the lot. The mall will be L-shaped and have a (defunct) anchor store at both ends.
Now I have yet to start on the mall building itself; HOWEVER, I do have most of the textures I need (if not all), so it should go up pretty smoothly. When the mall is completed (after 3~4 days, that's a hazarded guess), I will test it out, throw on a few pictures (there will be some as I go, too), and put it online for the Patreon folks to enjoy as an early beta.
I have no idea when a PUBLIC beta will come out, I'd say two months, maybe 3. Why so long? It takes a *LONG* time to properly build a city! A LONG time. Sure I could slap it together and you'd have miles of the same stuff block after block, but that's very boring, not very fun at all to explore once that sets in, and it would run like rubbish even on a 1080ti unless you had a 16384ghz intel 65535k CPU and a TB of ram... so yeah, it's taking it's time, but it's getting done RIGHT, so everyone can run it smoothly.

Lot is a little flat, doesn't have all it's speed bumps (or any for that matter), but it's got all the curbing/markings it needs, and it just needs one more section by the other end of the lot done (shouldn't take AS LONG as this one, as I'll be using this end-portion to base parts off of for the other end).
Can't wait to start building the LUZERUS store :)
    EDIT: from the cliffside road...

It's huge, and I mean huge, the mall will form an L-shape on the 'close' two sides of the parking lot (not the back lot, that will be 'behind' part of the mall, and the back lot will wrap around further).
    --That is all for now.

About 20 minutes ago I officially got almost all the textures I need into the game. I will be doing a few more textures, but as of 25 minutes ago, I've officially 'broke ground' on building the abandoned mall building. This ought to be AWESOME. I had more applicable textures for it than I though, being with BeamNG's industrial and JRI derelict buildings providing much more materials to work with than I originally counted on. Glad I left some of my stuff from Roane County laying around that I didn't entirely make much use of yet.

So get your engines shined up enough and ready to be bouncing around a two-level temple of the dollar :) Pictures incoming in a day or two's time. Hopefully by the end of the weekend any-who.
Woke up today and was like 'Awesome, now I get to design the mall' after arduous work designing so many parking lots!
Designing parking lots sucks compared to the mall. This ought to be awesome guys/gals. I will do my absolute best here.

Will the mall be an outside one? If so you should make little dealerships in it with see through glass just like how Tesla has showrooms in malls ( In Oak Brook IL there was a Tesla showroom in the mall and it was a outside mall. )

That's a lot of parking lots!

I do deeply express the fact that the last thing I want is to overwork you, but here's my tidbit of advice:

While the cracks in the pavement are a good start some other things would help improve the "Vacant for 15 years" look.
Tall grass coming through cracks in the sidewalk and concrete, along with shrubs and stuff.
I don't know if this is possible, or practical, (or you are already planning this) but usually most mall parking lots (Or any retail parking lots for that matter) have sections of grass and trees interspersed between parking spaces every now and them. If so, using dead, (Or using extra ragtag shrubs) could help with a overgrown look.

    Those are just my suggestions.

There will be shrubs sticking up here and there, and the lines will be more faded later on, when I get around to it (I will do different versions of said textures at the texture level, so I can use those lot models for other things without changing other than texture references).
There will be grass on the outskirts (edges) of the lots, with bushes, etc, things like that, dead ones of course, because it'll be mostly abandoned (mostly, there might be a store at one end still open, but there could be a couple out-parcels still in business, like the ever-ready BURGER WORLD).
It's going to be an enclosed, inside mall, 1970's vintage with a modest bit of mid-to-late-90s updating, before being quite recently abandoned. You'll be able to drive a car through it. The outside won't look too bad other than being boarded up and just a little run-down looking in spots (it's not going to be like a mall that's been abandoned but not demolished for 10~20 years, but more recently closed, so the outside won't be collapsing too much, but inside will be a different story entirely).

I've already got the outside of one department store started... though the inside isn't even started yet. Doors are for scale and won't be there in most finished entrances (it'll be able to be driven through, the doors will be knocked down and knocked inside).
    This:

Click the ATTACHED picture below at the bottom to see it in the modeling program (this is not 'in game' yet, it's within my modeling program, so downward facing sides and the insides of the extended facade are black when they should match the cracked tan plaster). That store entrance sure looks familiar...

I know I'm asking for this WAY in advance, as you still have to finish this map and Roane County, but could your next map be the Black Hills? I don't mean Blackhills 2015, I mean the REAL Black Hills, in South Dakota. You could include everything between Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse in the southwest, to Box Elder and Ellsworth AFB in the northeast. I would do this myself, but I would never be able to figure out how.

Good idea, but that's quite a tall order.

Considering Bob can put 1000s of hours into his work, I would imagine he would be more inclined to do something that he personally wanted to do.

The 1970s was a great year for mall and retail growth.

A lot of malls like this tend to go out of business because of degrading quality of interior spaces and general failure to acquire funds to renovate.

I can't wait for hopelessly outdated retro interiors like these:

If you are ever thinking of possible color shemes, just take the RBG value of barf green and turd brown. ;)

Maybe some black, so the mold doesn't show. :D

I specifically was meaning that next time Bob wanted to make a map, he would probably make one on his accord. (Somewhere he's been or has personal significance to him)

    Not to do with timescale.

Surely I'd spruce up Roane County a bit and at-least try and fix up some of the draw-call issues in downtown Harriman (in Roane County, where it's slow at the default spawn). Maybe make the 'Tree of Shame' for Tail of The Dragon.
I won't be starting any 'new' projects for the next 6~8 months at-least, if not longer. I'll be working on sprucing up my existing maps, and working on this project (which will be the majority of what I do in BeamNG for a while).
It will certainly have race courses, on Asphalt, Dirt/mud, and have at-least one dedicated 'monster truck' 4x4 arena. There will also be multiple Derby arenas, because I enjoy those quite a bit. There's also going to be something resembling 'skate parks' but slightly up-sized for vehicles, so you can do stunts and tricks all you want, and these will be featured in a few spots around the map.
Much of the race and derby arenas will be outside of the city limits, on the rural / hilly terrain surrounding the city.
There's also going to be a large Commuter/Metropolitan Airport and then a smaller air strip dedicated to an air base or something similar, as that question has been asked before.

Also a prominent feature of the map will be buildings you can drive in. From abandoned malls, to subway stations, or at-least 'see into' a little bit when you're within a block of them. This adds depth, and a whole lot of possibility for endless fun and exploration.

There will be many 1st's with this map. I am aiming no-holds-barred for the top map mod spot/ranking, for everyone's benefit. Who wouldn't love a police chase mission (a'la Blues Brothers) through a mall - the AI will be able to path through it also!
    --- Post updated ---
Just finished another mall entrance. Again, the doors won't be there in the finished product (they're there for scale of doorways), you'll be able to drive through the opening with a vehicle and crash about the inside, flying over fountains and bouncing off debris piles (most of the stores themselves will be closed off at one end, or walls recently demolished/cleared all together, especially at the one end of the mall near this entrance). You will be able to access at-least one of the anchor store's interiors (two-levels) from inside the mall and change floors you're driving on by driving up escalators (without railings, much of /all the railings will be gone) or by driving up 'fallen' sections of concrete slab from the 2nd level.

What I was meaning was when you start a new project. Obviously you will work on existing maps first.

In response to the rest of the post, I can't wait for Top Gear style racing between aisles. :D
