It’s as big as a tahoe.
    Probably handles like wet cheese.
The last-generation X5 is a car that I like, but this is too much.

It’s also astonishingly ugly. Needs a dialasis.

That was the idea, to make the car look horrifyingly cringey.

Also, there's a reason why Acura-sized logos on any other car that isn't an new Acura look either cringey or funny-looking.

That’s not entirely true. New mercs look fine with H U G E logos.

sure, they almost are the same height as the grille, but they're not really huge compared to Acura.

I agree with @redrobin here. Has the size and weight of a small house, is tall and top-heavy but not really set up for off-roading, has equipment you'll never, ever need at any point in your life and may not ever even use, has less sporting potential than Volvo's offering in the same segment, and is hideously ugly, but hey! It has a BMW badge and AT LEAST IT'S NOT A STATION WAGON HURR DURR!

Brotip: when you say "most people aren't car enthusiasts, so most cars don't need to be enthusiast-friendly", you're basically asking for more of this kind of trash.

Video look like its sped up to y'all? Youtube was down earlier but now its back up and it seems that every video is sped up by maybe 1/4. Speed is set to normal.

It looks normal speed to me, except for the slow-mo part of course. Based on how fast the suspension decompressing and the time it takes for the car to fall, it appears believable to me.

Looks like the guy with the Triumph Spitfires are definitely a retro-car enthusiast.

He does happen to own cars from the 2000s, 2 of the same Audi model and a Lincoln Navigator, but doesn't mean he hasn't stopped gathering them. There's an 80s Mazda rotary coupe (probably a FB RX-7) and an shell (though this is not as recent as the Mazda) of what seems to be a Nissan 240SX.

I'm not questioning whether or not its believable, that's my car. Was just wondering if something was up with youtube. Seems to be fine now.

Anyone here have thoughts on the 2019 Miata? I just got done watching Doug DeMuro's video on it, and I have to say, I think it looks to me like a nice little car.

The movable cupholders is a pretty awesome feature. The navigation alerts also sound cool. Doug made me chuckle when he criticized the trunk light. I think the option to turn it on and off is a good one. That way you can have it turned off during the day, because you don't really need it then, unless you're in a dark spot, and turned on when it's night. That I think can help save battery power.

Here's some problems I think I'd have with it.

I do have questions about the traffic sign recognizer. Are there traffic signs with devices that allow these cars to recognize them? Or can the cars actually see them? What would happen in an area like the rural town I live in?

I'm not the biggest fan of the speakers being in the headrests. I don't know if any of you have experienced this, but there's people in my area that has their radios blasting so loud, you can feel the walls and windows in your house vibrate. While I wouldn't have any problems with it, because I don't ever have my radio up that loud, the idea of putting the speakers in the headrests sounds like a good way to go deaf even faster for those who do. I'd prefer to have my speakers on either the dash or the door panels.

Is it me, or is the amount of options on the infotainment system screen a bit much? Like why do you need so many options? I understand the keyless lock one though. I can see that coming in handy.

And what do you think the hump on the passenger side is, that Doug mentioned at around 6 minutes and 19 seconds in? I'm thinking it could be the transmission, between the cabin and the engine bay is where I typically see the transmission casing placed.

tbh that jump was about as graceful as a tin of rusty nails falling down a steel staircase. The car shot through its travel like it was nothing and wasn't particularly composed on both the take off or landing either. I imagine that pretty much any modern (1980's onwards*) car would fair about as well.

*Not to say that plenty of cars before then wouldn't cope, since an early Mini would probably be the same story.

Sign recognition is either camera based, or baked into the navigation system, not sure of the specifics since I don't have experience with it. The signs aren't fitted with any additional hardware, that would be incredibly expensive to roll out and likely lead to each sign being fitted with 8 million different boxes for each brand.

People don't adjust the volume in their car while sat inside their house. They adjust the volume in the car to be as loud as they want it. If the speakers are closer to their ears, they will seem louder, so they won't turn them up as loud. Speakers generally take up space anyway, so I doubt the ones in those headrests are as loud as the ones that would be found in car doors, since there isn't really enough space for super loud speakers. No doubts they are more than loud enough though.

Not sure why people complain about having more options, as long as they are labelled and organised in a usable way, more options is always better. Since if there is something about a car that irritates you, you can go in and fix it. Otherwise you can chose to leave them alone or fiddle to your hearts content.

I don't know, I would take an iPad any day over the Tesla system, and I am not exactly what you would call an Apple guy. Since the Tesla screens can be a bit flaky at times and have some really strange quirks.

Hopefully Tesla will get the software and hardware improved over time. At least they seem keen to issue updates to address the issues.

Sorry my english was failing me. What I meant was that it looked completely normal with nothing out of the ordinary. Anyways, nice car. Crown Victorias (and other late 1990s/early 2000s American cars) are super fun because you can pretty much drive them however you want and they take the abuse without breaking. The feeling of speed is great, turns at 35 feels like you are close to the limit even though you aren't.

Well, that's modern car design for you. It's actually really simple to create a compact car in 2018:

Step 1: Take the midsize car you were building 20 years ago.
Step 2: Make it really ugly.
Step 3: Hide an airbag behind every available surface. 40 more airbags sounds about right for now, but check back in a few years to make sure it's still sufficient.
Step 4: Glue an iPad to the dashboard where the radio used to be.
Step 5: Take the engine out of the subcompact car you were building 30 or 40 years ago, and drop it in.
Step 6: Add a turbocharger, so it almost feels adequate to people who've never driven anything decent.
Step 7: And electronic throttle, so the driver can order a pizza in the time between stepping on the gas and actually going anywhere.
Step 8: If weight is under 3000 pounds, add sound insulation and higher-quality interior surfaces until it exceeds that figure.

Congratulations, you made a compact car! Now go advertise it in a way that will make anyone who is over 30 or didn't go to a public school want to vomit, and all of the market share will be yours!

Well, basically every Tesla is like that. I also remember the times where I thought the Model 3 looked like a legit crossover, not a sedan.

It could be either one. If it's based on the GPS, probably baked into the navigation system.

I think one of the reasons why I thought about little devices attached to signs is because of something that was on the stop sign in the video. I don't really know what it is.
    untitled.png

And since you put it that way, it makes the idea of taking every single sign in the United States and fitting them with sign recognition hardware doesn't sound very economical and worthwhile.

Though I still wouldn't be surprised if those people I mentioned wouldn't care how loud it seems to them.

And with the keyless lock option, I was thinking that if you don't want your car to make a loud sound to let you know its locked, announcing itself to everyone else in, let's say, a Walmart parking lot, you can change it to make it quieter. A short horn burst is what I've seen a lot of modern vehicles do when the doors are locked using the keyless remote, including the Dodge Stratus I've mentioned.

I didn't really mean it that way. I like having more options for just about anything, but to me there's a line between a good amount of options, and just pure OCD, and I feel like the options Doug talked about on the 2019 Miata is a bit lenient toward the latter. Some I can see being very useful, but some like adjusting the turn signal sound is just weird to me, and in the video I didn't really hear a difference. Why would you need that? On all of the cars I've driven, including the Crown Victoria and the Stratus, I could hear the turn signal sounds just fine, and I didn't really care about how loud they were, just as long as I could hear them.

I'd say I'm probably right about the hump on the passenger side being caused by the transmission casing.

Looks like the exhaust to me?

Wonder whether the passengers legs also get slowly cooked by it?

As for the signs, its not just the US. They would have to put boxes on every single sign globally. These systems are already in use in many countries. VW and BMW specifically state that theirs uses a camera mounted in the windscreen mirror. Ford UK don't mention how they do it (its on the Fiesta as well as a few other models), FIAT states they have a camera on the windscreen of the 500X.

I could be right, I could be wrong.

And just imagining the sign thing being done in the US alone is enough to convince me of your point. All of the participating countries in the world would probably have to invest millions, if not billions into such a task.
