Well, by that definition, there is no such thing as an AE86, which is a class of trims. Everything is an E80, then.
AE86 is an RWD version of the E80 chassis. "AE88" is part of the VIN of the North American AE86 Corolla GT-S trim. For comparison, SR5 had "AE86" in its VIN and DX had "AE85" (not to be confused with the actual JDM-only AE85 Corolla). Somebody not burdened by car knowledge once saw "AE88" in a VIN and boom, a myth about the mysterious "AE88 chassis" was born.
