I'm upgrading to a 1600 and 1060 soon, so that more powerful gpu and 6 cores should help with Beam. And besides, I don't typically use Vsync.

https://libreboot.org/ - software by conspiracy nuts, for conspiracy nuts. Sure, there are theoretical backdoors in processors/motherboards, but if a "Nation-State Actor" actually injected malware into every device owned by a U.S. citizen in the manners the nutters describe, a) the resulting flood of data would make up the majority, or at least a noticeable portion, of traffic on the Internet, and b) they would need 300+ million warrants, which would grind the court systems to a halt.

The real reason firmware is often encrypted is because if it weren't, it would reveal details about the hardware that competitors could use to their advantage. Sure, this presents some issues, but to say that there is some covert, blanket operation constantly leaking data from billions of semiconductor devices (CPU's, hard drives, graphics cards, network interfaces, microwaves, toasters, etc.) over the Internet is preposterous! The perceived problem is, quite simply, a side effect of capitalism - companies don't want their competitors finding out why their products are better.

Successfully booted macOS Mojave on a VM.
Take that, Tim, I'm not gonna pay millions for an inferior device just to run your OS.

So my recently acquired MacBook Pro died. Screen kept hanging, turned it off, and now it won't turn on anymore.. I hear the DVD drive sound as I turn it on, but no image and no startup chime. Any tips?
Luckily I have a spare one for parts. Went upstairs to get it andddd it's got a swollen battery. Nice.

Will take it apart and check if that mobo works.

do you guys think that instead of getting a 1060 and r5 1600, I could get a 1050ti instead? I will use the PC to play BeamNG and Brick Rigs, with some (heavily modded) C:S here and there.

GTX 1050 Ti = Only 15% more power than the GTX 1050
GTX 1060 (3GB) = Double the power than the GTX 1050
GTX 1060 (6GB) = More than double the power than the GTX 1050
No. You'll be better off getting a GTX 1060 instead. Or if you could consider a RX 570/580 too.

Here's some data to back up your point regarding video card performance per dollar. Pricing varies widely on these things though, so where you live can and will affect what is the best value.

I dug out my old iBook G3 snow to see if I could use the bench-top power supply at school to run it since I have no AC adapter. It does work but after like 7 years of sitting around the battery is very dead and I had to use the console to force set up since I don't have the original account password, I have ordered a new battery and adapter for $40, that should be coming later this week then I can see what it can do and clean up the drive

grr I now have a massive dilemma, I have a Huawei mediapad m5 and it's got a decent CPU, Kirin 960, around 240GFlops nice and powerful, but now something has caught my eye, All do cube X, it has a Super AMOLED screen which kills any IPS anyday. Butt it has an ancient Mediatek CPU, 28nm! old cores, and a GPU which the old iPad air can eat for breakfast. BUT it has AMOLED and HDR, and VP9 support, which means I can actually use 1440p on youtube.

Except lacking the power to support that more demanding resolution, so it is one of those "damn, we have shitload of these old CPUs, what we are going to do?" models that you are supposed stay far away from.

It might of course work and be nice, but think for a moment, can it really run that 1440p?

Luckily I got them for free, I'd never pay any money for a used 2011 MBP 15", as they'll eventually all go wrong.

Yeah that's another issue, my M5 with a bigger and stronger GPU lags scrolling sometimes, god knows what a GPU half as powerful would do. 28nm, Cortex A72 and a PowerVR 6 series GPU is really a shame. But AMOLED. I think I'll keep my M5, I can only tell the difference between amoled and IPS at night anyway. And also I want to use my tablet as a megasized satnav and car pc (OBD info etc) and that Chinese tablet has no GPS.

And OLED has potential for screen burn, which just sounds really wonderful for intended use, does it? :D Well, does that apply to AMOLED, I have no idea, but better research such things before spending load of hard earned currency.

Like CRTs which could get windows burned in, hence invention of screen savers, old bank and hotel screens had UI permanently on, that was time when those did run anything but Windows as windows was not quite popular yet, it took 3.0 and especially 3.11 for Windows to become really popular.

screen wise make sure that it's IPS or VA. You won't want TN, trust me!
IPS if you normally work in well light environments (where you won't notice contrast as much, but will appreciate colour more), or VA where you sometimes are in darkness, the killer contrast ratio really gives video oomph behind it, like a plasma TV did. (except colours aren't quite as juicy as IPS).

I second this. I run both IPS and VA daily and the VA monitor is what I do everything on. From gaming to video watching to programming, you can't beat a VA contrast ratio.
