I never go into the "automation" section of the mods menu because I know they are just going to be a car body with no interior and unbreakable tinted glass. How come automation cars are like this?

Because the Automation game doesn't have an interior designer. So Automation cars are just poorly jbeamed shells with nothing inside. And the glass is nonexistent. You can add an interior and glass by doing some coding and blender work. But I won't go in depth with it though.

Yup, because Automation doesn't have a system for designing interiors, and dynamically building interior meshes that work well in every car body is VERY hard indeed.

We'd love to do it, but it's just not really viable.

    Can has interior:

It is bit buggy though, but still you can examine how that is done and make your own interior swaps.

Automation could make some generic interiors that work for each car type, maybe 20 at most, for example: 2 generic interiors for a truck type - 3 generic interiors for a large car type - 3 generic interiors for a small car type - etc. and each could be slight configurable

Or interior design templates, some elements that show up based on your choices (e.g. different materials in more luxurious interiors, a radio of the type you choose), plus some placement options for them and optional elements.

even if they initially scale the dashboard/doorcard models roughly to the dimensions of the body, and textured the inside of the roof to have a properly modeled internal carpeting, (or a decent bare metal framing for "basic" interiors), and added an option to morph the dashboard, somewhat like the body (e.g. making the centre taller, connecting to the centre console, smoothing into doorcards, biasing controls towards driver, etc.), and then had fixtures, things like air conditioner vents, infotainment screens, radios, chrome/wood trim, possibly gauge cluster parts, even interior door handles, window controls, etc. that were placed on the dashboard.
another thing would be splitting the "basic, standard, premium, sport, luxury" interiors into more options, and expanding upon, for example, seat material; cloth being cheap and reasonably comfortable, leather being prestigious and comfortable, and vinyl being slightly less comfortable, but more utilitarian.

This could also be expanded to other parts of he car, such as engine compartment hoses, I was thinking of some kind of script that would auto connect hoses and wires based on a starting and ending point, Example 1: the radiator would have a start point, the engine would have an end point, the hose would auto generate between those 2 points to connect the radiator to the engine/ also you can choose the color and material of the hose. Example 2: battery connectors - follow the same process as example 1 in fact all other engine connectors could follow that example, the auto generate would have to account for clipping, somehow it would have to be programmed to avoid clipping as best as possible, the rest can be tweaked manually by the user. This same algorithm could be used for: Exhaust Pipes, Drive Shafts, Axles etc.

on one of their little dev updates, killrob showed the exhaust generator feature off. from what I understand, it makes an exhaust all the way from the manifold, and connects to any exhaust tips you place, and puts the models of the muffler you select in. (I think this is why they recently changed the exhaust tip models to have no actual backbox connected.)
