30 men died in the end (ignoring secondary health problems). Only 2 during the first 24 hours (1 was in the pump room when the explosion occured, the other was crushed by a girder, received double the lethal radiation dosage even in an area with relatively lower levels (radioactive stuff mostly went upwards and was spread over the area rather than directly into the rest of the plant) and died in hospital without ever regaining consciousness (there are uncited rumours that he did awake and spew a load of nonsense before suddenly dying). The following 28 died from radiation related illness within the following months. Many other workers have died since with illnesses though to be caused by the accident. Thousands across the area are thought to be suffering from radiation related illnesses today still. At 200m altitude it was still 9 times the lethal amount of radiation.
Here's a short video about the cleaning personnel. You can also see the moon rover at work: The work the liquidators did is amazing. They had to clean every building in Pripyat multiple times in a year. They had dig up the contaminated roads and lawn and bury them. They even buried whole houses.
I would love to visit this place someday. Not a guided tour that's boring. Itd be cool just to drive around the place. - - - Updated - - - I've heard about them. those guys are heroes. Why aren't they recognized? - - - Updated - - - After looking through the imgur album, it's showed me how big of an operation this actually was. Holy shit this place was an engineering marvel. It was a fucking massive place. I'm at a loss for words. We have a lot of nuclear plants around here and my parents both are involved with nuclear. I'm around a lot of nuclear plants, but this, this is simply astonishing. And that control room tho.
