upload_2019-2-19_15-9-57.png where did this very handy rating go and why. nowadays it's needed more than ever, so I can avoid writing rants for 20 minutes and instead express myself with a simple "meh, disagree".

Most meshslappers are glorified to the point of being almost untouchable by (atleast) the 5 people in their private group that can't tell a masterpiece like Stoat's Coronet from a Russian Automation car.

    upload_2019-2-19_15-16-41.png
a good 75% of those kind of people reside in groups / conversations like these.

To the point where they defend them no matter the circumstance, @StirlingSLR for instance told people to harass me on youtube because I "reviewed" his "mods" and then falsely claimed aformentioned video because it had a DL link in it's description.

There is no such thing as a "good meshslap". No on all counts.

Downloads for a mod which uses Turn10's property, being 99% of the meshes and textures. Afaik, it is illegal to claim someone on behalf of someone else, especially when that company is as huge as Turn10 is.
    upload_2019-2-19_15-15-55.png

I'm still not even sure what to make of this blatant abuse.

    To clarify;
I have no problems with proper high quality ports of meshes from games like the Montgomery with it's bespoke jbeam, but lazy barely modified ETK or Sunburst Jbeam (or any other existing vehicle) really irritates me because it waters down the overall feel of the car, as if you do this, you end up with all cars handling and driving pretty much the same. Because their suspension layout is identical, only changes usually being wheelbase / vehicle width.

It's very rare to see a mod that uses another car's jbeam have a significant weight difference from it's original Jbeam... so that is usually not even a good argument.

Especially when the author simply does not care enough to learn how to make something as simple as a front bumper for themselves and then decides to either lie their way out of it with a lame excuse or stretch another cars jbeam to "fit" it,

Jbeaming car body panels is such an easy "linear" thing to learn. If I, a lazy 16 year old with no redeeming skill outside of copy pasting different suspension on a Japanese hatchback can do it, anyone can with a spare 45 - 50 minutes to learn.

I would rather have 5 mods that take months to make because they're scratch Jbeamed properly than 20 mods made in 2 days each commissioned by some money hungry "Youtuber" wanting to capitalize on some easy money with another low effort crash compilation video.

(Not my photos.) (and yes, this is illegal if that mod author chooses to use another person's models, textures or whatever.)

Quality is far superior to pumping out meshslaps in this case. And most people appear to agree with that.
    upload_2019-2-19_15-43-33.png

Again, sorry if this is all over the place. I rarely proof read these posts, feel free to correct me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The sentence "They are some of the best meshslaps in recent times" made me actually cringe physically, want to laugh like a maniac, facepalm & feel sad at the same time... Does that person even think/read what they're writing? I can't even express what I feel after reading that

Perhaps Beamng should charge a small fee for each mod downloaded with 50% going to the creator. I’d be happy to pay for quality mods and this would encourage people to spend more time and effort developing stuff.

If people don’t like a mod nobody is forcing them to download it. I just download what I like without the need to whinge about mods I might consider low quality. Also it’s worth pointing out that a lot of the criticism seems to come from those who contribute nothing of note themselves.

It wouldn't encourage people to make better mods. Actually, it might do the opposite, people will know they can make half-assed shit and sell it at the price of a quality mod.
Also, the idea of having to buy mods is really shit.

It doesn't matter if the member who made that point has contributed to the forums, as long as they have a good point and aren't spouting bullshit then it's fine.

I think eshslaps mostly came to being cause people can't unerstand that modding takes time, as it should. To be honest the difficulty of making mods for this game is already perfect, making it easier would kill some fun from it. You get way more excited to see your suspension or a vehicle part working after spending 4 hours on tuning the shocks and springs alone, or over 10 hours making the suspension itself. I feel sick if people take the "good enough" approach... You don't just move the nodes in NBE and call it "custom jbeam". If you already take time to do something, you might as well do it properly, starting from the mesh, ending on the jbeam. The same goes for maps, as I do not have any experience in map creation, seeing how some people obviously tend to skip the actual terrain research part and logic in designing the map itself makes me turn away from them. You can see tons of low effort maps with just some random highway, quick slap together resources from official maps, no roadside texture blending, just sharp texture change, as well as really low detail if you even call ithat. Sadly, even big nice and full of features maps often seem to miss the step of creation called terrain research and map planning, for example the "polish roads" map which is filled with out of place and out of scale locations and strange choices, which for me completely negate the nice textures and pure amount of features.

My mods also aren't perfect by any means, I rushed out the burnside ute before I actually knew how to model properly, dually H-series van doesn't really make sense and V10 car pack was just my "modder's notebook" in which I've tried different stuff while learning how to mod.

Generally the 2 things which I see most often which lead to people either giving up on modding or creating crappy mesh slaps or bad maps are:
-creators wanting to make too much visible progress and often rushing things
    -lack of research

the most pointless thing abot a meshslap is that it's basically just a pessima/200bx/grand marshall that handles an drives the exact same way.

they're so shit that they're redundant

I doubt this post has any point but...modding is a hobby I don't have to do, yet I would have to spend a very long time if I want a mod to be called decent even. I put in effort, yet it doesn't seem like it would be worth much. And yes, mods aren't easy, and some of the fun is finally getting something working, though it doesn't help when the difficulty curve is high..

waits for hate because this probably was stupid

Small fees for downloading mods would for sure be helpfull, but even at 0.01-0.02$/download, people would sadly just switch to other sites. Also BeamNG would first need to fix the downloads counters *cough* V10 Car Pack *cough* - 1.5k$ for such a shitty mod would be just unfair though.

    meshslaps are cancer.
Some are better then others but its still bad nonetheless
I feel bad for people enjoying the prasu because its basically the 200bx. highly modified and worse.
I wanna fix everything like it should work irl but man, i dont have an engineering degree in everything. im just starting my 1st year of college.
Mods are a high learning curve for those who wants perfection. in meshslaps the learning curve is 100 times easier. there isnt really a learning curve for meshslaps since its the most simple stuff you can do basically.

Tbh its disappointing, i wanna make mods that are somewhat perfect but lack knowledge on how to make it. Theres barely any support for mods and due to the complexity nobody is gonna help either. Wiki is getting better but its still missing a ton of things.

I love making mods, i love beamng. but unless you are somehow already in that specific field of engineering, good luck getting a jbeam to work the same way it does irl.

Which in result demotivates some to make good mods because its simply impossible for them to make that.

At times this makes me very sad. because unless someone makes a formula which helps us calculate beam stuff easier, most kids who wants mods will stick with meshslaps.

I feel as if somehow the devs are slightly to blame for the meshslaps but they arent at all. just the complexity of the subject makes it hard to work with.

Realism isnt easy. BeamNG is proof of it.

But i want to add another thing.
Nothing in my life has ever made me so passionate about physics and such. so much to the point where i bug my teachers to teach me more complex physics stuff even tho we dont need to know those.
Beamng started a flame of passion inside of me which makes me hungry for learning. Never in my highschool life i wouldve said please teach me physics.

For some people tuning a shock might take 4 hours. for some 2 weeks. well for me its looking like its going to be a life adventure of learning physics.
Some people are up for that task, some prefer to keep it simple with meshslaps.
It honestly all depends on the motivation of the creator.

Lack of simplified modding documentation adds to the problem I feel. As a lot of the wiki just assumes you already know what so and so means, when in reality you probably don't D:

I find the documentation there is sufficient and within the modders community there are some people that do help a ton with modding (keep in mind that helping is NOT making step by step tutorials and making stuff for you).
As far as calculating beam properties, you can either use complicated physical and geometrical calculations along with some materials knowledge, or roughtly guess the values and fine tune them by try and error.
Wiki is always outdated for few weeks after the update drops and barely anyone knows how the new features work, so my solution to that is to either kindly ask devs or find it on my own by checking out the game lua, as it is fairly easy to understand and in most cases it has some nice comments to go along with it.

Step by step tutorials just do not work for beamng modding... There are wayy too many variables and most tutorials would get outdated when updates drop in, so by far the best way to learn modding is to start simple and just explore all of the possibilities you have as you learn and find them, sure it takes time and you will not make a vehicle right away, but you will feel far more accomplished when you actually understand what you did - that's why I hate on my own mods, since I now can see how bad they are once I've made them and learned as I went. Now I'm in the process of reworking most of them, just so I can learn even more and get more experience with jbeam and modelling.
