Stupid queston in title, a friend has recently aquired an old 3D-scanner from 2014 which works fairly good. Scanned his dogs and cats which seemed okay when they wasnt moving. Is it possible to scan an 850 in 3D and convert those 3D-files into BeamNG mesh/model? Just asking it out in the open as i assume my old 850 will hit the scrapper in the near 5 years.

Yes, you would need to convert the file to collada. It would deform horribly though so you would need to retopologize it.

I can guarantee the output of the 3D scanner might look nice, but the polyflow of the model will resemble the flying spaghetti monster. 3D scanners aren't meant to make models for games, and it'll be almost unusable for beam. You're better off just using the model as a template to make a more game friendly model.

I have been wanting to do something similar to this for a while with either 3D scanning or photogrammetry just to try it out. Unfortunately I can never seem to get good results with my scans. I usually try photogrammetry because it can be done for free and without a 3D scanner as those usually cost a lot. Even still I have gotten some "ehh" results which do actually look like cars... but not much better than that.

What I have learned though is that you will want to scan the car on an overcast day to reduce shadow interference, and possibly a day that's a bit hazy in the morning so some dew will have built up on the surface of the car making the paint and windows non reflective. Granted, with a 3D scanner, probably you won't run into those issues, but every little bit helps.

As for deformation, I wasn't too concerned about that (if I could ever get it far enough that I could consider throwing it in game) because it was all just an experiment anyways. Not something I really planned on releasing.

I think you also have to cover the car in dirt because the reflections will mess up the scan. @ferrettank scanned his car so you might be able to ask him about this.
