    The First generation Mazda Cosmo is a 2-seater Grand Touring Sports car that was manufactured by the Japanese auto manufacturer Mazda from 1967 to 1972. This was their first performance oriented car, and the one that sent them down the path towards the performance legend they are today.

    The Cosmo was first introduced at the 1964 Tokyo Motor Show, and after several minor design changes and prototype test cars, the production version launched in 1967. Partway through 1968, it was revised once again, featuring a face lift enlarging the grille for better airflow to the radiator, an extended wheelbase, air conditioning (Though this mod doesn't have it,) and a more powerful version of the 10A engine. This hand built car's production ran until 1972, with just under 1200 units made overall. Today they're prized collectors items, with rusted out hulks bringing anywhere from 20k-60k USD, and pristine examples routinely pulling well over 100,000$ at auction.

    Everything about the vehicle was designed by Mazda from the ground up, around the Wankel engine;
    The design goal was to find the best use for every ounce of the quite impressive, but relatively weak power output of the small engine, which required the car in question to be light and compact, have a low center of gravity, and have an innovative suspension and drivetrain solution.

    Because of the need for light overall vehicle weight, these cars are very nimble. They also had a somewhat soft suspension, making up for it with a sway bar and unique suspension geometry up front, which is designed to add a small bit of a cornering advantage utilizing normal vehicle roll while cornering.

    The bodywork, and frame, were put together all as one piece as a unibody... Asides from the lower valance panel for access to the radiator and front sway bar, hood, trunk, bumpers, and doors; Leading to an overall more structurally sound design compared to contemporary cars, even other unibodies.

    All loaded, the car only weighs around 1000kgs, or a little over 2200 lbs for us Americans, quite impressive for the 1960s when most sports cars at the time were twice as big, weighed nearly twice that amount, and utilized weaker engines that were significantly larger... European, Japanese, and American cars included.

    My mod in particular focuses on the the L10B version of the Cosmo, however it also features a WIP version of an L10A aswell. Currently there's no plan for a 110s export model; asides from different badging they're almost identical to the JDM version.

    Featuring a hand built double wishbone independent front suspension, and a DeDion tube dependent rear suspension, no part is directly taken from any other vehicle without first being significantly edited or transformed; Almost all of the JBeam work is 100% custom.

    screenshot_2019-02-22_00-31-25.png
    The vehicle features a 10A Wankel engine, which IRL generates around 110HP and 96 ft-lbs of torque (BeamNG has it at 126 HP and 103 ft-lbs of torque using data from real torque curves.)

    This mod also features its own custom wheels that have been integrated into the globalWheels system. These wheels can be installed on any car that supports 4 lug wheels, and most 4 lug wheels are compatible with this mod (With a few notable exceptions I will discuss in a future post.)

    MODEL;

    The majority of the modeling work, and all of the UVs and textures are mine;

    The engine mesh came from @mike94 s 1958 Satsuma 210 mod;

    screenshot_2019-02-22_00-23-23.png

    It has been reconfigured, re-UVd and re-textured.

    I have contacted mike94 regarding his engine model and have permission to use it;

    The overall vehicle model has some flaws here and there, however I'm satisfied with it... it does the job, and looks halfway decent. I'm open to hearing constructive criticism/better ways to do things.

    PROGRESS REPORT;

    • Model; 100%
    • UVs; 100%
    • Textures;100%
    • JBeam; 99%

    CREDITS;
    @Driv3r1142 ; Modeling, UVs, textures, JBeam
    @atv_123 ; Support, reference finding, testing
    @mike94 ; Original engine model
    @donburi ; References, some textures.
    BeamNG.drive devs; JBeams used as a base and transformed into new parts, bits and pieces from official car models
    @Quattrovalvole ; Engine sounds (taken from https://www.beamng.com/resources/13b-wankel-rotary-sound-for-the-200bx.2234/)

    BUGS;
    Some users are reporting issues with the engine sounds not working. Please comment if you're having issues, I'm still trying to figure that out as for sounds are working fine on my end and for other users.

    NOTE; THIS MOD WILL CONFLICT WITH ANY MOD WHICH HAS A FILE PATH NAMED "jbeam_tester". If the mod fails to work because of this, please let me know.

    REQUESTS;

    If anyone knows what sorts of options these cars had, including colors, please post below. I'm looking to add some stuff to this car that most people haven't seen before, that were options.

    I would also appreciate some better engine sounds. I'm currently using placeholder Wankel engine sounds, however they kinda sound funny, and don't sound like a 10A.

    Please make sure your feedback is constructive and useful. I also ask that you refrain from mindlessly bashing things just because you don't like something

    Please keep the thread clean, and on topic. Please don't suggest any fake names, for the time being this will be a forums only project/mod.

    Great one, yet again!

    One question, are you planning to make a lore-friendly version in the future?

    Dont have to feel forced to do this, as it is only a suggestion.

    Keep up the good work and will be another high quality mod!

    This looks like a promising mod and looks like it would be fun to swap the Gavril 4.5 in it.
    --- Post updated ---
    P.S. according to Google Images, the Mazda Cosmo was only ever used as a police car in Japan, so maybe a Japanese police skin?

    I can't wait for this mod. Really interesting to have a Mazda Cosmo in the game. Really hoping the Mazda Wanda gets made someday.
